Absolutely excellent. Massive thanks to OP Kendray. Observations: 1. Barnsley playing largely modern european passing football. 2. Refereeing being too much on the side of the defence. Cooper would have been sent off now for that challenge. 3. Has a similar vibe to the current side. Only difference is they had a bit of experience. If we do get taken over in the transfer window, then one experienced pro, that wants to get into coaching. Please.
Remember that game and the significance of beating them but I would have put my house on Evans' goal being scored at the kop end. Memory playing tricks again. It was lovely to see again the fluidity of our movement, the grace of Glavin on the ball, the willingness to get forward. Great days...thanks so much for posting.
I love the midfield, not 2, not 1 not any defensive holding players !! 4 good attacking players that could defend when needed. Just think if any team dare to actually play with an attacking ethos in todays turgid football !!!!
Enjoyed watching that. If only the tv footage from this era was in today's quality it would make watching even better. Only a minor point though. This was around the time when I was fortunate enough to see plenty of games - a period in my life of exile when I was stationed at RAF Finningley and living in Barnsley for a couple of seasons. What a treat having such players in our side! Mike Lester - the Barnsley version of Tony Currie (seeing as we were playing the Blades). McCarthy/Evans at the back - superlatives just can't cover how good a pairing that was. The experience of players like Bobby Downes What a midfield - how could a "team like Barnsley" have such players. I think we took the likes of Glavin and Banks for granted at the time. Like John Stones, we just didn't know how good they really were! Finally, a note on Martin Peters. It was a privilege to see a 1966 World Cup Winner at Oakwell, even though it was 14 years later. I know that Alan Ball played for Blackpool against us but I can't remember any of the others gracing our turf. Anyone else remember differently? And finally, finally, I think that was Brian Moore on the commentary for ITV, with Derek Dougan the studio linkman. Apparently we had not beaten the Blades at home in the league since 1935!! Mind you, up to 1980 we hadn't played them much had we?
Commentator was Martyn Tyler, I think he did YTV for a couple of years. Moved to Granada for 1981/82, replaced by John Helm as I recall. This was the BFC team that got me hooked. Glavin my hero, and went to school for a couple of years with Mike Lester's son. What a side we had.
Really enjoyed that , I was there & watching these highlights brought back to me how good that team was . Watching King Ronnie still makes the hairs on my arms stand up , what a player
I remember that game, not because I went ,I didn't, but it sticks in my memory as I had the choice of going to the match ,as I normally did, with my dad, or , going to the Odeon to watch 'The Empire Strikes Back' with my mum ,being a 9yr old Star Wars nut it was a no brainer.Saw lots of that side though ,77-82 is my favourite period of watching the reds, brilliant side, full of steel with a large helping of skill, wonderful.
Many thanks for that. I should have been playing for Barnsley cc 1st team at the Circle (Hullcc) that day but the game was abandoned for rain just before 2 pm. Four of us jumped in my Ford Capri and aquaplaned back along the M62 at daft speed for the conditions. Parked up at Courthouse and ran down to t'Well. Was just paying in when the roar for Butlins goal was heared. It was timed at 16 mins. Those who have knowledge of a Capri's handling in the wet will realise the the abject stupidity of my driving style that day!
Yes, me too, I was there but somehow managed to get in with the "home" fans (Spurs fans really). I also went to the first game at Oakwell which we drew 1-1 (Aylott if memory serves). Great night, I remember that Glav got 2, can't remember who got the other though.
Roger Hunt played for Bolton Wanderers against us in the 1971/72 season, at the end of which we were relegated to Division 4.
Roger Hunt played in 2 cup finals in 66. One at Hampden and One at Wembley. Winning 1 and Losing 1. He lost the Cup Winners Cup final at Hampden when Dortmund beat Liverpool. Sorry but I don't remember the other final.
I don't recall being at that match. So that's three of the World Cup winners then. I doubt if there were any more.
