We should've replaced Conor with a player at least as good as he is. They're ten a penny and easily affordable.
No doubt Davis also lost his confidence last season because he suspected we were going to sign Lindsay.
And you don't think there would be a higher price on a player that is already just as good as the outgoing player, yet has even more potential?
I like Liam Lindsay, think that generally he has performed well and without him I believe our goals against number would be much higher this season. Jackson and Lindsay have emerged as our best combination at centre half and it's no coincidence that with that pairing we concede on average nearly half a goal a game less than with other ones. All are entitled to their opinions, I just find it disappointing that people have seemingly swallowed YT's line about Lindsay being the replacement for Roberts. He never was, he was signed before Roberts' departure and Hecky clearly stated that another centre back was needed in the light of Roberts' departure, hence the subsequent arrival of Pinnock. Think about it - if Robbo had not left, would Lindsay still be here - yes. If Robbo had not left, would Pinnock still be here - unlikely. The original intention was to play Roberts (right) and Lindsay (left), therefore comparisons are somewhat academic imho. Robbo and Lindsay together would have been just right imho. I also think that if we're looking at our not very impressive defensive record the main area that should be under the microscope is our porous centre midfield that, with the exception of Williams, regularly exposes the central defenders. Other teams eg Sheffield United, Preston, Aston Villa, Bolton, to name but a few, have also had a lot of joy getting on the outside of our full backs. Add in the decline in Davies' form and you are getting close to the perfect defensive storm, amidst which Lindsay has, in my view, been the one consistent positive, rescuing umpteen situations.
Amazing thread. If the players we bring in are substantially worse then......the league we are in will be worse. Some of the players we have replaced the outgoing crop with are worse than those players were when they came.
I never said we should still be paying £200,000 for his replacement though did I ? We have not improved our base level, we are still scraping around for the same standard as we were in a level lower. Yes there are still a few players around in the non-league, division 2 etc that will be good players, but now everyone is shopping in that area, not just us. I think we need to up our sights a little if we are going to push ona bit. or we could just aim to finish 4th from the bottom and be happy if we finish there or above. Barnsley have had to sell to survive all the time I have been watching them, it never changes, but we have never sold all our best players at the same time before, it has always been more gradual.
To start a post by saying someone is 'vastly overrated' seems to me to be a false premise in itself. Overrated by whom? And what exactly does 'overrated' mean? It sort of suggests there is an objective benchmark against which a player should be judged. My judgement of the player in question, for what it's worth, is that he has settled in pretty well, and is by far not the biggest concern we have at the moment. One objective benchmark against which to judge Lindsay against Roberts might be their respective performances when the two teams met recently. That suggested to me, on the day, that Lindsay looked far more accomplished. But it was one game and therefore, for all I know, Roberts might be playing out of his skin every week, and he simply had an off day when we played them. Is that better?
Of bloody course I do, that is the whole point !! I dont want us to go out and spend tens of millions on a player, but if we get a player in for £200k and sell him fo a few million, then I would hope we could at least spend £1 million of that money on a better player to start with, that way we can build them up in the same way and make bigger profits in the future, I must be one of the few fans that want BFC to progress and not just be happy because we still have a team !!
For some people it's either what we are doing now or financial oblivion. They can't see any middle ground.
Agree with that, but once you start looking at even slightly more proven players you find that other clubs are also looking and able to pay them more in wages.
They are already doing that now with the players we have been picking up cheap! Other teams are now after those same players, leaving us with a smaller pot to pick from! if we are just looking to finish 4th from bottom, we only have to miss our target by one place to get rel;egated and that will cost us a lot more in the long run. The plan can still be used but at a slightly higher level.
You mean better than the other player was at the time they joined? I thought you meant better than the outgoing player at the time of being sold, so that's why it didn't make sense to me. Obviously, spending less than is coming in would result in a step back. But I agree it would be nice if the step back isn't so big as to be back at square one.
People say that the plan isnt working but we keep getting these cheaper players in and selling them on for millions. Its securing the financial stability of the club. Of all the players who we were promoted with, with the exeption of Alfie Mawson who's playing in the premier league (for a team that get battered most weeks) who is really pulling up any trees? We have seen the best of them when we flog them on and its great business by the club.
I don't think we're just looking to finish 4th from bottom from the outset. I'd say it was a minimum requirement, but not an aim. Also, considering the wages Sunderland and Birmingham (and probably the majority of the teams below and around us) pay, and the amount they pay for players they're not really at an advantage for being able to do so. Ollie Watkins (£1.8 million) is the kind of player you're talking about, but Brentford with gates of less than 10k can afford to be in front of us in the queue because of their rich backers. That's what we're up against as things stand when it comes to buying players. Also, Bradshaw has scored more goals than him up to now, so no guarantees.
But I never said you did. I don't believe we can afford to sign players of the same standard as the lads we've sold. But I do believe we can, and have, signed players better than some of those sold players were originally when they arrived (Hourihane being the exception). Just my opinion. I can't see a problem with the next side of the argument, old mate. I also believe there should be a level of flexibility in the transfer policy. If that means bringing in experience to help in the development of our younger talent at a higher level, then why not even if it's for a short period? I certainly believe these young lads would benefit from a modern day Ian Evans, or Ray McHale, if they exist, are available and willing to come.
Fair play for taking the time Old Gimmer. I think you were spot on in your first response to be honest.
