Listened to the commentary on t'net and to me it sounded like a good game, plenty of chances, Derby more clinical. commentators all thought we deserved something out of the game, but on here it sounds like we were atrocious. Can someone explain to me why the discrepancy? Is it commentators with rose tinted glasses, or posters just angry at the result and venting? Can both be right can they?
Can't agree that we deserved something out of it, we were soundly beaten and it could have been more. We created one good chance. We missed it because Ugbo is rubbish. Potts also hit the bar, but that was a cracking shot from distance, not a missed chance. We've played a lot worse in this losing streak, Leeds was much, much worse, but I couldn't even begin to formulate an argument that we deserved something from the game today. The better team by far won the match and they won it easily.
It came down to finishing. They had the class we lack. We put more effort in all over the pitch, as we have to do week in week out. It worked today, but because we have inferior players in most positions and in particular we are not a threat up front, the inevitable happened. We didn't deserve anything tbh.
Up until the first goal on 40mins it was a better performance than I expected. We shaded the game and contained Derby quite easily in that period while probing quite well ourselves. The first goal could have been defended better but the second goal was the result of a very good move,no complaints.Second half we should have got back to 2-1 and we might possibly might have got a point.A strong penalty appeal ,Potts hit the crossbar from 20 yards out and Ugbo should have scored but the keeper pulled of a great save. The 3rd came from more slackness from us although it was a clinical finish. This team can get out of this current situation but we must get some quality in key areas to add to our work ethic.
I’m not sure we deserved anything from the game (we had brief spells where we looked okay) but they were definitely a lot more clinical. When we can’t score from 4 yards and then they go up the pitch and score from outside the box, it kind of says it all really.
Derby certainly didn’t deserve more, they had 3 shots and didn’t have most of the position. What they were is big and strong, something I have never seen from a Barnsley team.
They hammered us without really getting into first gear. Could have been more if they had actually tried.
So what you are saying is the THIS team can`t get us out of this situation ? That we need to bring in some quality, which will mean that the team is changed ?
If you look at the game without the goals you’d say we did ok, but we’re so incompetent in either final third that nothing else matters. We were comprehensively beaten by a superior team, 3-0 was fair enough.
The ref missed a nailed on penalty for hand-ball for Derby, not sure who it was but they virtually picked the ball up.
Wouldn't say we had plenty of chances. We had a few attempts from distance that brought an ooooooooh, but the real chance that could have given us a foot hold was Ugbos, a few yards out goal at his mercy. I wouldnt say we played well or badly all considered, just predictably slow with the usual gift from our defence for their first goal. Other teams have the ability to go from back to front with a couple of passes, but we don't. Everything is laboured and over played. As things stand, we aren't good enough and are heading for trouble because we are going through the motions.
Up to their first we’d had the better chances, but unfortunately with a team made up of teenagers and lads playing at a higher level in the main, we are having a dip in performances - it is wholly unrealistic to expect them to complete a 46 game season without periods like this - we have a certain vulnerability and so when they went one up it knocked us - we didn’t help ourselves today with some awful passing and de union making. That said had Potts effort gone in off the bar or Ugbo have scoredwhen he hit Carson then we might have lifted ourselves. As it was their 3rd had an air of inevitability about it, but 3-0 flattered them imho. Had we a better squad depth then Barnes, Williams, Pottscould be taken out of the heat of battle - as it is we rely on them. Beyond themwe are into our U23’s. January is vital to get this season’s Kevin Long, Aidy White and Adam Hammill in.
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion Stuart, but as one of those three commentators We definitely deserved something out of the game Stuart, although Derby were a class act with quality and experience.
We're in a bad habit at the moment, as we were in previous years under Hill and Flitcroft at this level, of gifting sides the first goal. We weren't great today, but were very much in the game today, and then a sloppy pass (Yiadom?), ball across, mis hit clearance (McCarthy) and we're one down. You could see any confidence go at that point, and got hit with a second quickly after. The lack of quality, naivety, whatever the reasons are, sides aren't having to work hard to beat us at the moment, they just need to hold out and they'll be given a chance. Factor in a lack of clear chances created, or failing to take the clear ones we do create, it's a toxic combination. A lot of our play shows a lack of confidence, experience at this level, frustrating but not really surprising I guess. Players needing that split second too long on the ball etc, so we look laboured for much of the game.
That wasn't the reason I was deposed Sean. I'll always call a game as I see it or there's no point doing the commentary on a personal level. I've always tried to look for positives over the past 20 years or so and I'll continue doing so and I won't slate the team or individuals unless they aren't trying. I haven't changed my style to please anyone just because I've been brought back.
