Saw Jim Gannon in Yanks (burger place in Sheffield) straight after that game. His face was a bit of a state. Me dad asked him what happened and to say he wasn't best pleased with Coops would be a massive understatement. We didn't tell him we were Barnsley fans, but it was hard to stop giggling.

Gwyn Thomas as a makeshift striker alongside the Fowl loanee kid Carl Bradshaw ?.
Make no woder we lost 6 in a row at the time eh Lil. Clarkie OUT!. ;)
But that squad had some good talent and graft in it, and thankfully it was allowed time to work out.

The only other time I can remember being so fed up with a poor strike force was in Jan '99, when we'd sold Ashley Ward of course. We had the kids Mike Turner & Karl Rose, and we had Don Goodman on loan (the bloke who is now a complete moron as a pundit & co-commentator).
And what did we/Hendrie do with the Ward money ? ... ohh yes we thrashed it all away on Mike Sheron of course. lol

SOME went on the Sheron transfer. I was under the impression that the majority went on the North Stand.

Well whether it went on the stand, Im on about who the long term replacement for Ward was with that money. And what a waste Sheron was eh for roughly £1.5 mill.

It goes to show it's value for money that counts for more, rather than the size of transfer fee. Hindsight also plays a part in these matters.

Speaking of £1.5 mill strikers, do we reckon Georgi Hristov was worth anything like that amount ?.

There’s worth / value and what you can get someone to pay!

Don’t mock Sheron I’d say every one of our fans thought he would be excellent at the time. Ignore Tyrone’s post above he’s just being contrary as usual.

Don't worry about it Pompey, I didn't understand a damn word of what he/Ty posted anyway. :D
But yes admittedly Mike Sheron was a name of some sorts when we signed him, having formerly played for Man City, Norwich, & QP.Rangers.

I'm with you on that, I think most supporters at many clubs would have classed Sheron as a good signing.

If you look back, as I see it anyway, Bassett made two key signings to sort out what Hendrie had left, which wasn't a bad side. Bassett brought a better keeper in than Tony Bullock, Kevin Miller. And got a proper target man to replace what we'd lost when Ward was sold in Neil Shipperley.

Bassett's flaw was not signing De Zeeuw back up and trying to replace him with Dave Tuttle and Keith Brown. I still think we'd have gone up automatically with de Zeeuw in that team,
