Best form of defence is attack as soon as we scored we should have maintained our shape and gone for a second. We got deeper as a team and went from 4-3-3 to 4-5-1 with Mcburnie and Thiam dropping in deeper the ball came back quicker and more often. To try and defend a 1-0 lead in the manner we did was madness we need to be braver and push for a 2nd. Thiam; Looks very good out wide quite a handful Potts: Having a good game up until we scored then looked poor as the game went on he wasn't the only one. Bring on yids why O why? 5 defenders 3-5-2 which ended up 5-3-2 not closing down the midfield and inviting more pressure on the back line leading to a goal. Really disappointed with the 2nd half and negativity especially after an encouraging 30mins.
Considering Hull brought on 3 quality subs at this level and we were down to arguably our 5th choice CH it's a decent point. Certainly in a better position than we were this time last week. JM will be learning about his players all the time and still the likes of Mallan and Knas to inject something different into CM.
The 2nd half in Both games we pretty much sat deeper and deeper, not doing the basics right. The only difference being Hull are a better side than Birmingham, who were woeful, so we were punished.
Morais knows a lot more about football than I and everyone else on here do so I'm loathed to criticize, however, the subs we made left us without much of an option to relieve the pressure. One thing Hammill does pretty well is running with the ball to move the team further up the pitch but we had nothing last night without him except the hope that Moore would hold the ball up. Anyway, the key in games like this, especially away from home, is not to lose them. We managed that so onwards and upwards. I just hope we can build on it because we have a tricky run of games coming up.
One thing people fail to recognise is that there is another team out there on the pitch , when you are the homeside & losing at halftime , you often alter your shape , style etc , plus a half time bollocking changes things big time , look at us against Burton , I know we did not win the game but the first half we were shocking, concede twice & Burton were well in control , the second half , we changed our shape, made substitutions & upped the tempo which resulted in a totally different game pattern
Sorry but the Birmingham performance was more organised and professional than we've been for a long time. We did all the basics right at Brum, Townsend's goal kick being charged down notwithstanding. We also defended higher up the pitch, it wasn't like we sat on our 18 yard line inviting pressure.
He must have looked at the bench and thought that he had nothing to put on up top so tried something different
I would not shed a tear if he did not featire again to be honest. McBurnie is streets in front of him
Why change how we were playing after we scored the 1st goal? There was absolutely no need in going so defensive for such a long period if we hadnt change our shape i would of fancied us to get a 2nd at some point. Yes the manager is new so we have to cut him a bit of slack but he will have watched footage from previously in the season and seen our inability to keep clean sheets so the need to score a 2nd is a must and were not going to achieve that camped on our 18 yard line for an hour.
I presume Thiam had a knock and Mcburnie was knackered - certianly no replacement for McBurnie on the bench
To react to what the opposition does? You can't just continue to play the same way when the opposition throws players forwards, unless you're the far superior team (which we're not).
I think the idea that we were great in the first half and just sat back in the second is a bit too simplistic and doesn't give any credit to Hull. Yes, we were better in the first half, but we weren't flooding forward at will. I thought it was more even than that, and Hull had a few chances as well before half time.
Whilst a point away from home is always welcome sadly this was one of the winnable games for us. Be a bit different when we go to Cardiff etc.
Agree. Despite the spirited performances against Birmingham & Hull, and to a lesser extent Burton 2nd half, our lack of quality still shows, and teams like Cardiff will beat us with no problems at all. So its important to take maximum points away from the clubs down our end of the table. Yesterday was disappointing really, especially when we were in the driving seat for so long.
I don't think he had any choice but to change tactics. Hull changed personnel and we were getting swamped. Front three were nackered with all the chasing back and Hull were running through us at will. Both full backs were weak and Gardner & Williams were overrun. Thankfully he changed it (twice) and we got a point. If he'd left us playing 4-3-3 ImI pretty sure we would have lost. Then people would be giving him grief for not changing it. He can't really win.
Me neither. Walsall, or Shrewsbury, in the summer for Tom. He tried his best to replace Winnall but he was always going to fall short. Good, honest player but we need better.
I don't think we were half as dominant yesterday as at Birmingham. We could have been 4 up by half time on Saturday. Hull were better without the ball than Birmingham and were pressing us hard to get it back off us.
I agree we need goals now from our strikers at this stage of the season, and Tom simply doesn't seem to know where the net is anymore (even though hes still our top scorer!). And speaking of Shrewsbury, do we reckon Stefan Payne could have been as good as Tom here, if he'd been given the same gametime ?.
Disagree we dont keep clean sheets so when we go one nil up we should go for the 2nd. After Hull scored and the personnel on the field along with the moment we were never going to react and score. Our opportunity was to keep playing in the same manner as we did up until the goal to try and get a 2nd its all about opinions but i feel we are always likely to concede and need to score 2 in order to get 3 points. Lost count the amount of times we drop deeper and deeper and the inevitable happens. Like i said all about opinions but the negative approach taken for the majority of this season see's us in the relegation battle if we carry on in the same manner are we going to peel away? Time to be brave and be positive and back us to score goals. A point here and there isnt going to keep us up we need to be picking 3 points up especially in games where we go 1 up.
