Apart from all the medical treatments, (adam Jackson last night for example) pure oxygen is used in loads of other applications. Ask any metal worker for starters

James Hudson Taylor or Titus Salt

JHT was unknowingly responsible possibly for the current Chinese ownership of BFC and links between Barnsley and China. Hudson Taylor found his calling as a missionary in China. Revered by many Chinese to this day.

Titus Salt one of the greatest examples of a man born into wealth and privilege who, nevertheless, believed those who worked for him should be afforded dignity and treated with respect rather than exploited and discarded. An example of a philanthropist, whose paternalistic approach to employing people long term and looking after them inspired loyalty, something that modern day capitalism, Globalisation and large Corporations are no longer interested in.
Who on Earth drew that 'shallow' list of relative nobodies up? There are many engineers e.g. Joseph Locke Joseph Bramah, scientists, e.g. Joseph Priestley writers e.g. Ted Hughes Alan Bennett J.B.Priestley, John Harrison self educated carpenter and clockmaker who solved the problem of longitudinal Navigation at sea saving tens of thousands of lives with his accurate maritime clock when all the famous scientists of the day could not William Wilberforce, and many more, any
y number of which make the OP list look ridiculous.

My own personal favourite is missing only because he messed up - born and raised in York - I give you Guido (Guy) Fawkes!!!

I think he quite possibly could be the most undercelebrated yorkshireman in history - and quite possibly the rightful claimant to the title.

Whilst his peers Isambard Kingdom Brunel and George Stephenson built the steam engines which brought about the industrial revolution - where would they be without the track...

Isambard and George lye at number 2 and 65 respectivley in the greatest ever britons - but they wouldn't have got out of the starting blocks without Locke's track.

Can you imagine the children of Portsmout and Durham not being taught about their towns greatest sons and their engineering prowess..... yet in Barnsley theres nowt in our schools about this great man. Probably becuase he had a few bob so he's obviously a Tory

    What no Brian Blessed?

Awful list of candidates, if pressed I would vote for Dickie Bird.
