am I a Yorkshireman...... Up to very recently there has been a very strong representation of Yorkshiremen in the management of BFC be it in owner, directors, managers. Most supporters would have been very happy with this - the club being run by people who were 'one of us' - there would have been an empathy between fans and managers. Now we have a completely different set-up - owners/directors/managers/trainers form outside Yorkshire (and the U.K.) - It isn't as much a Barnsley Yorkshire Club as it used to be and does this result in some supporters feeling distanced from the club? Has the influx of foreign personnel affected your feelings for the club?
should have said that I am domiciled (is that the right word) in Barnsley and, man and boy, been a BFC supporter for a long time.
I'm a Yorkshireman, but not from Barnsley. Born in Harrogate lived for a long time in Lincolnshire then Sheffield so plenty of bullets dodged. Personally I want to see as many British players at Barnsley as possible, and I guess that extends to the management. I never want to see nine random Italians in our starting lineup a la Watford a couple of years ago. I just don't see the point. Initially I was slightly disappointed that we went down the foreign coach road, especially having had a local lad in charge, and the feelings of pride that brought, especially when things were going well. And maybe that last sentence is the key. When things are going well..... Moving on, so far I've been very impressed with Jose Morais, so if he can take us further then why not? As for players, ideally I think at least 7 of the starting 11 should be British. We play in the English league after all.
I’m from Donny born n bread and I don’t care where players come from as long as they’re good enough to represent MY club .
I quite like it when we have people from Barnsley involved with the club and it would be quite nice in an unrealistic romantic notion (except for the fact that we’d have even less chance of winning than we do now) if everyone had to be from the town/city they are playing for. As that’s not the case though it matters not one jot to me whether the person is from Portsmouth or Portugal.
Can’t understand why anyone who hasn’t a connection with Barnsley should support Barnsley. It’s never been a glamorous club and with the exception of promotion into the Premiership it has always been stuck in 2nd gear. As for the people that own, manage and play for the club - I’m not bothered where they come from. All what I want to see, is that the club is successful and making a name for itself - which will then reflect favourably on the whole town.
I've never lived in Barnsley my family moved to selby in April 87 a month before I was born.... My dad was a miner and transferred from North Gawber to prolong his career at the selby coal field! Sadly he has passed away last year but my nan and grandad still live in Royston... I could of ended up supporting Brighton as that's where my mum's from but thankfully I got taken to Oakwell in 96 and have had a season ticket ever since.
There’s a variety of reasons people support a club ! I started in the old fourth division so I’m obviously a glory hunter . This will be my 39th season and had a ST on and off since 1990 ! There’s lots of BFC fans in Donny and for the FA cup semi we sold out a 55 seater coach from woodlands and Carcroft area .
Not far from me these days. I moved to Owston in March last year. In East Barnsley born and raised On the playing field was where I spent most of my days Chillin' out maxin' relaxin' all cool And all laikin’ football outside of the school When a couple of guys who were up to no good Started making trouble in my neighborhood I got in one little fight and my mom got scared She said, "You're movin' with your wife and kids to DN6.
It all depends on the results.. if they prove to be winner's playing good football, the praise will be load. But If they prove to be *****, and can't find their ar5e with both hands... The slagging will be fierce..
I'm from Barnsley,Yorkshire but I'm not parochial, which is rare in some Northerners. What is important and relevant is competence, not gender, race or birthplace. I think the new people have demonstrated competence so far.
What about someone from Wakefield, Pontefract, Dewsbury or somewhere else that doesn't have a league club? Would you rather they support Leeds? Anyone can support who they want for all I care.
I was born and brought up in Barnsley though haven’t lived in the town for a looooong time. It’s irrelevant to me if you have a ‘connection’ to the club. It’s all about quality and what you bring, though obviously the fewer English players we have in the team, the better we’ll be!
If you are from Wakefield then there’s an excuse there - as that town doesn’t have a club. IMO Barnsley Football Club should be making bigger inroads into Wakefield. Plus there’s an excuse for those areas that perceive Barnsley as their local town even though they are outside the district eg places like Hemsworth, Wath, Brampton, Denby Dale etc etc. However ...... you are wrong when you say ‘Anyone can support who they want for all I care’ When you support your local club you are also supporting your local community. The more success Barnsley Football Club has - the more investment into our town and more jobs for our kids. So a guy with kids from Royston shouldn’t be supporting Leeds United. Should he Hecky.
Theres alway's been loads of BFC Fans from Hemsworth/Mexboro/Wath/South Elmsall areas... nearby ,but they aren't exactly Barnsley ..Quite a few from Sheffield thesedays
