I was just highlighting 2 quite possible scenarios of next season. Perhaps watching this same squad in league 1 won’t fill you with dread and potentially have the opposite effect. However, I hope that scenario doesn’t happen and we are still a Championship club, but we will obviously require more quality players.
How anybody can think any of our Centre Halves are Championship quality at the moment is beyond me, as the last few weeks proves. If we could have defended simple crosses or closed down shots we would have won both games. Lindsay is having a ******* mare at the moment. Pinnock has looked rusty since he came back (Did have a purple patch before he got injured) and Jackson is just coming back from injury and the horrific concussion the other week. Jackson has been our most consistent performer as centre half and tbh the jury would be out on if he is a long term Championship quality Centre half. For me to consider anybody Championship quality, I question whether they would get in a mid table, perennially safe Championship team. None of them would.
Davies Yiadom Lindsay Jackson Pinillos Potts Gardner Williams Thiam Moore McBurnie Currently our strongest 11 imo. Wouldn’t mind Mallan in midfield though.
The big issue is we’ve never had a settled back 4 all season, every time we look to have built a partnership or a back 4 we get an injury or now we decide to start rotating full backs. I could be wrong but my eye tells me Jackson, Lindsay & Pinnock are all good centre backs & if they get a run in a settled back 4 they’ll prove it
You cant possibly think that Gardner and Williams are both in our strongest 11 can you Id probably have Pinnock in for Lindsay and Mallon in for either Gardner or Williams but as the OP makes the point there isnt really a lot to chose between Lyndsay/Mills/Pinnock/Jackson/Pearson or Cavare/Fryers/Pinillos/ etc. compare our current midfield with the one that started last season and its disappointing to say the least
Couldn't agree more been saying for a while Lindsays distribution is very very poor I hope he can improve this as it's the weakest part of his game and he has a lot to offer. I think Pinnock will turn out the better of the two in the long run and if both fit I would choose Pinnock over Lindsay
For some reason we find ourselves in a position where a good centre half is some who can pass the ball to the deep lying midfielders and actual defending is secondary. It's bonkers.
Did I question his defensive ability? No both Pinnock from what we've seen and Lindsay are both good defensively but my point was Lindsay gives the ball back too easily and I think Pinnock distribution is better. Giving the ball back puts us on the back foot if you want to be successful in this division you have to retain the ball. I do like Lindsay as his job is to defend and he's good at that but I sometimes wonder where he's looking when he's passing as pointed out by others.
You started a thread saying how good Marc Roberts is and of he was in our defence it would be better hate to break it to you but Marc is a regular in a side who are lower than us and conceded more goals. Let's not blow smoke up ex players than pull our own to bits eh.
I don’t care how well he’s doing this year. Last season he was brilliant for us, won just about every header. Very rarely was he dominated by a centre forward. Those last 5 goals we’ve let in wouldn’t have happened with last years Roberts. He’d have dealt with them easily. I’m not one usually for pulling out players, I’m just fed up of basic non league standard defending and people making out they’re world beaters, when they clearly aren’t.
Again, your argument then is the same so no winner. I’d argue that Roberts isn’t happy at Brum, and didn’t want to leave his Home town club. All I can say is the same as I said, last years Roberts won every header. This year we haven’t got a player capable of that. Jackson has been the closest to that over recent games but on Saturday he didn’t do his job on the first goal, and I’ll agtee fully that we need to be better at stopping the cross. Even so, it wasn’t a great cross and should have been defended easily. The reason I’m challenging all this is because nearly every day there’s a post saying we have championship standard Centre Backs, when the reality isn’t true, imho of course.
Nowt to do wi hindsight. A blind man on a galloping horse could see it was a bad move. Still, at least it was regretted
That's your opinion and you are entitled to it. But you can't really argue with the facts like I stated previously I know you.made the excuse he isn't happy there but you don't really know that for a fact. On a whole the defence have been good over the course of the season pinnock Jackson and Lindsay have looked decent to me although not to the extremes some build Lindsay up. But that's just my opinion.
How could you say if Marc Roberts had been in defence we wouldn't have conceded the last 5 goals? So we would of kept cleen sheets against middlesbourgh and cardiff and took 6 points from.those games...... okay then.
No one is claiming that yer daft chuff, just that Roberts might have won headers that others didn’t compete for. Goalie and full back would still be cack
