Darren Sheridan? I don’t disagree with you but I can see the merit of someone who protects the defence and can pass the ball reasonably competently. Even the most expansive teams have one. Imagine a midfield of Mallon, Moncur, and Potts if you dare. I assume also that you’ve had the misfortune to watch the likes of Togwell, Dawson, etc. over the years.
Also Jacob burns. Nowt wrong with that type of player and the idea that they just sit back is daft. Gardeners shooting may be largely poor, but the fact that he gets into those positions proves that he doesn't just sit.
This might be nostalgia talking, but like Scowen I would like to think Sheridan had more to his game. I'm not against the idea of a defensive midfielder, but as players are no longer allowed to tackle I think the defensive minded midfielder has become obsolete. I take your comments on board though.
It frustrates me that very few midfield players can tackle, have a range of passing, are able to carry the ball, can beat a man, or possess a potent shot. You would have thought that they were the bare minimum requirements.
