A few years ago we were perpetual strugglers in the Champ and it caught up with us. We couldn't compete, we were poor, we were relegated. The survival at Huddersfield that famous day was a blip, it meant nothing in the end cos we were doomed the following year. Some people seem to think that visiting new grounds is a reason to accept relegation, not a very constructive way of thinking, and that it's ok to go to Accrington, Lincoln or Port Vale etc, or is it better to plod along, at the very best, in the division we're in? I can't honestly make my mind up after no home wins in about two years.... or whatever it is... I want to see the best teams at Oakwell, a full ground, but I hate coming away every game biting my lip and feeling let down by all that is currently Barnsley football club. Those who said that we would be this season's Rotherham weren't very far wrong. It is not worth crowing about I'm afraid the fact that we are "better" than them. We may be swapping places with them if they pull their finger out. I'm in the "senior" range of season ticket holders so for me £200 is still quite a bargain, working out at £8.70 per game, regardless of which division we are in, but it will still be quite a difficult decision whether to renew or not. I repeat, I honestly don't know what to think !
I absolutely hate this self-defeating argument as outlined above I bet sunderland fans said the same thing last year. Relegation isn't certain to lead to success.... Thought of the mediocre.
Stay up and worry about next season when it comes. In any sport, team or individual, I was always taught to aim for the highest level possible, and not settle for being a big fish (e.g. Halibut) in a small pond (e.g. Tinkers). If you're not going to attempt to improve (within the boundaries of financial realism of course) then what's the point?
I'd prefer the struggle. I don't see us bouncing back (have we ever bounced back at the first time of asking?) until we have another clear out and start all over again.
Last time I felt relegation was disastrous because of the ages of the squad & the amount of loanees & that we’d been losing money every year. Now we’ve got a young squad who’s struggling a bit at this level but many of them are proven in league one, many of them are under contract for at least 2 more years, it looks like Wigan & Blackburn could well get promoted so there’s no real big clubs for the level who you’d consider very likely to finish above us. We’ve also got wealthy backers & the clubs been making big profits the last few seasons. I think we’re in a much better situation than last time. If we go down with Burton then you’d not expect them to be able to loan the same type of quality again so I wouldn’t see them challenging & Sunderland could be in a right mess financially so there’s big question marks about whether they’d challenge.
For entertainment purposes and winning a match occasionally relegation sounds good and the slow death of struggling in the Championship doesn’t really appeal. At the same time now we are a rich mans play thing who knows what their patience will be for L1
This may be a controversial opinion but most of the goals that we’ve conceded this season and in the latter half of last season have been that appalling that it can’t simply be put down to being in the Championship. If we get relegated to League One but fail to sign a new keeper then I fear that we’ll still concede left, right and centre.
Championship football any day.. With what the new owners have stated, we should become more competitive and grow year on year if things go to plan. I think it is important to stay in this division this year. League 1 footy equals, lower home crowds, 150 away supporters each match.. Less income for the club, therefore lower wages, smaller squads.. I find it bizarre anyone would even consider the thought of relegation being the better option. It is by no way a foregone conclusion we will be relegated. I still fancy either reading or Bolton to fall below us. Strange Feeling we will win the next 2 matches against Sheff Utd and Ipswich.. I still believe..
Fair play rules come into effect in league one less income .less bargaining power and owners if IF we stay in the Championship will put more into the club probably buy it outright from from the council. Could mean development of a ground that needs updating. Everything to gain from staying up.Believe we can pull rabbit out of the hat .
Who knows, just don't get all this doom n gloom.I'm far from a happy clapper but give the new regime a fkn chance eh? IF we stay up we might kick on or we might not, same IF we go down!!
Isn’t Salary Cap Management Protocol implemented from a side’s second season onwards? I’m sure that newly relegated Championship clubs are exempt in their first season in League One.
No, no exemptions unless you have players on more than three year deals at the point of relegation I think
