Only a win will do lets get oli and Moore in the centre

I feel only a win will do, it will be tough. but we need Oli and Moore centrally to do this. Or the ability to change to this promptly if it is not working.

Central mid I would have gardener and potts - 442. if it doesnt work, switch to the familiar. Hammil and isgrove providing the crosses.

It needs to be a win if we stand any chance of pulling the escape off. Thoughts?

 

442 didn't work prior to Jose coming in, and very little has changed in terms of personnel other than McBurnie.

I'd stick with 433, I don't understand the notion that McBurnie has to be played centrally. He's only been quiet in a couple of games, and has linked up very well with Moore in the last few games I've seen. He's scored 6 goals playing as a wide striker, and has said himself that he likes playing that role.

We struggled to create clear chances when we played 442 which is something we were certainly not guilty of against Bristol City. I think the game tomorrow will be more open as Sheffield United like to play a similar sort of way. It's basically about out scoring them at this stage.

 

How many games did Moore play under Hecky?

 

I don’t want us to play 4-4-2 but it didn’t work before Jose came in because we didn’t play it other than very occasionally. Normally it was 4-5-1.

 

Still don't have the midfielders for 4-4-2.

I would hate to see both Williams and Gardner "protecting" the back four though.

When it comes down to it though, if you don't have the players the formation is largely academic.

I see your point, but hence why I said the ability to promptly change from 433 442, and vice and versa if its not working and struggling. You could argue moore and oli didnt play as a 442. also Oli could do more centrally as the goals he scored was from being in the centre. Also if we are not winning games using the 433 system, would you prefer to stick with and risk keep losing, or actually try something else.

Repeat - we DIDN’T have tall centre forwards prior to Morais coming in.
Hecky said repeatedly that he wanted to play 442 but he didn’t have the players to use that formation - so he mostly had to play 451 with just Bradshaw up front.
That’s why McBurnie and Moore were brought in FFS !!!
Is that so difficult to see ??? !!!

As McBurnie and Moore arrived - Hecky left.
So the squad has been built to play a proper 442 formation - but that formation just hasn’t been properly tested over a period of time - because Morais has changed the whole formation.

So we get the ridiculous situation of McBurnie out wide and tracking back to help the fullback.

BTW - if we finally play the system that suits the squad with McBurnie and Moore in the centre and two wingers Hammill and Isgrove putting crosses in - then IMO we would then need to strengthen midfield with two defensive midfielders - Williams and Gardner - especially against clubs like the Blunts who have a strong midfield.

 

I agreed to a certain extent in what you are saying, but would it be too big of a risk to change to a system we have barely played with these players in such a huge game, and what would pretty much decide the season. we was so close beating bristol and arguably should have picked up other wins in this system. But I do see that oli would do more damage centrally. its all if's and buts. that being said if he did go 442, and loses the abuse he would get would be crazy. Also you could argue it as been individual mistakes that have cost us, not formations. what I would say is 433 as created chances that we were not before. tough one.

 

2 seasons ago the turnaround happened against the blunt could history repeat it self personally I think we are league 1 bound but hope I am wrong

 

I'd say thats a fairly decent analysis if the situation. We still don't have the midfield options bit our squad is probably best suited to 442.

 

I REPEAT... FOR THE 1000TH TIME..... ONE BIG **** OFF STRIKER DOESN'T MAKE ANY DIFFERENCE TO THE FACT THAT WE SIMPLY DON'T HAVE THE PLAYERS FOR A 2 MAN MIDFIELD.

Moore played in a 442 under Hecky, and did very little, he's looked a lot better in a front 3 as the player on the opposite side of where the cross is coming from can drift inside.

If it was simply down to having a big striker in the team, Peter Crouch would be world player of the year.

 

I just think it's been proven already that with the midfield we have, we wouldn't create enough chances, like we didn't previously.

 

The point is, with a 4 man midfield, we created nothing. The strikers haven't been the issue for me this season, its the formation we've played and the lack of creativity from midfield.

 

Of course strikers have been the issue.
Barnsley just did NOT get the strikers they needed in the summer.

How many times have we battered teams for the first 20 or 30 minutes this season and ended up losing !!!
After 20 or 30 minutes the opposition realising that Barnsley arnt going to score if they played all day.
Lack of Barnsley fire power has just provided other teams with confidence to go on and score and win the game.
And that was evident right from the Ipswich at home game.

But we have those strikers now - but they need to be playing off each other.

 

I know the feeling. At least you finally acknowledge that the midfeld 2 are not up to it! Therefore regarldess of teh increase in suitability of the front 2, we are still totally unsuitable in the centre of the park.

 

Nowhere near as many games as where we've simply not created anything for the strikers, whoever they've been. There were some games where we created 4 or 5 chances. We had 27 shots on goal last Friday.

 

I don’t think the midfield is poor.
Ok - we haven’t got the sweet left foot of Hourihane.
But other than that we have sufficient in midfield.
He haven’t a Hignett or Glavin at the club but we haven’t had that quality for many years.

I particularly like Potts who can drive the team forward from midfield - unfortunately he misses out playing a 442 because we need defensive cover in there from the start - Potts only brought on during the game if we need someone that can attack from midfield.

 

We can’t play 442 without someone like Houriane with a Scowen or a Morsy

If we play Williams and Gardner we can’t create enough

 

We arnt at a stage to play flowing creative football.
Just get the ball up field and Moore and McBurnie will do the rest.
Or - send it wide for Hammill or Isgrove to get it into the middle for Moore and McBurnie.
Sheffield United or any team in this division would struggle against the two strikers we have now.

 

Moore and mcburnie have never played as a two, tomorrow is the time to try it with Gardner and moncur in the middle put yiadom to left back as he is the best one and bring McCarthy back. The rest need to man up and get a fxcking win.
