I don't really fancy nipping to downtown Kabul tho' of a Saturday evening for a bite to eat and a drink with the Mrs, taxi fare would be horrendous, I'd rather stay in Barnsley . Problem is as she says ,'its a bit rough' , its hardly picture postcard northern sleepy market town anymore .
Has it ever been 'a picture postcard northern sleepy market town'? No. It's no rougher now than what it was 30 odd years ago when i was a teenager. Any town will have it's neer-do-wells, always have had but thankfully they remain in the minority. Considering the amount of people who go out over a weekend in barnsley the incidents of serious, premeditated assaults are extremely low. I appreciate how you must feel about this issue though.
As someone else said my problem is that the surroundings are terrible. One momento looks like a really nice place but it's in an area that I wouldn't walk alone in or take a lady in after dark. Pinocchio's could be a decent place I've no idea but just look at it. It looks like a cheap cafe from the outside and to get to it your have to park god knows where and walk past shuttered up charity shops to get there. Most of the others I think are on market Street? Again park and walk. The other major problem is that the vast majority are at the same side of town as the clubs and bars. I don't want to be going for a relaxed meal and negotiating pissed up idiots in nights out. The sooner that the revamped town centre is completed the better. Would be amazing to see the likes of one momento moved to the new square
I think that is very true. My mam and dad go out for a meal at least once a week (generally a Sunday) and have done for years and years. I don't think they've had more than 1 meal in Barnsley centre but they love to drive out and find a nice pub somewhere.
Walk the other way. Around townend and summer lanes a right laugh when suns gone down. All the cranks come out to play.
I love pub meals too, in fact I prefer them to town centre meals. It was just that the thread started off about the lack of decent restaurants in Barnsley, something which simply isn't true. The surroundings however, as others have said, are not up to much. My last visit to an Italian in London was spoilt by beggars during our meal. One even came and sat down at our table. My last visit to a Japanese restaurant in Leeds (behind the railway station somewhere) was spoilt by drunken knobs banging on the windows. My last visit to Sheffield (Smoke Barbecue) was spoilt by beggars, charity collectors and drunks in the restaurant swearing loudly at the next table. That's why I stick to Barnsley, it's quieter. In my experience of course.
Examples please? I go in the commercial every few weeks or so and havn't had any problems walking into town after.
One thing that really struck me about that thread (but there was no way I was going to hijack and derail it) was how many guys were now saying that it shook them up as they wouldn't feel safe walking alone at night any more. I half wanted to point out that that's how I and many women feel constantly but, as I said, I wasn't going to say anything to take the focus off Jay and it's not like there is anything anyone can do about it anyway. I'm not sure what my point is, or that I've even got one, just an observation.
You can park smack outside Pinocchio on an evening . My perfect Saturday is a couple of pints before an home win , meet the Mrs in Pinocchios after the match, argue about footy with Leo , Vegie pizza extra olives bottle of vino Blanco happy days and an early night .
If you like Italian food I would recommend Italian Kitchen on Eccleshall Road . Looks a bit like a cafe but it's run by a brother and sister and the food is outstanding.
Outside/outskirts of Barnsley Italian Kitchen , sheff Pointing dog, sheff Strafford arms The Ford, Holmfirth (Good pie) Farmers boy , Shepley The woodman inn, thunder bridge Akbars at Rotherham for curry. Inside Barno Pinocchio Chilli Pasha Secret Italian Asda breakfast ( beats Rob royd half the price) Dale tavern ( £5 on a Wednesday full dinner , not for me but mother in law swears by it , saying that she swears at everything ) .
Cadeby Inn between high Melton and Barnburgh . Fanfookingtastic . And a whisky bible with endless choice and at least four real ales . Can’t recommend it highly enough !
My mam and dad really love it there too and took me out there one Sunday. The room is so strange, I don't know what I was expecting but it looks like everyone is just sat in a bingo hall. I think it's because it all on one level in a square room with tables just next to each other with no pillars or anything in between. The food was amazing though, it even persuaded me to be one of those saddos who takes pictures of their dinner:
I'm surprised they don't call the bingo while they are eating their dinner. Btw I can see a bit of porcelain on that picture you need to squeeze a bit more on .
You wouldn't have got any spare from my mother in law she's got stealth like killer instincts when it comes to food . She likes to build a new mountain every Wednesday. Then the infamous four words to her sister " oooh Sandra I'm stuffed " . Bless give me a gun.
You're not wrong. Was it nice mate "you got a right plateful....". I don't want a plateful, l want a nice meal that doesn't require a fork lift truck to lift me out of the restaurant.
Excluding Jays recent issue and comments from my good self there has been several posts over the last couple of years regarding around that area and folking getting into mither on the way home. I beleive a number of posters describe the area as beruit... going back to the days of Dj fatty boys move to NZ. Just look at the rogues gallery in the garage windows! I lived up there for just under 5 years. Poggy for just under 2. Most evenings there was always a few lads knocking about on the ale and/or gear. Be it in sparrow park, park on farrar street, near quarter hall or around peel square. Weekends these numbers grew. Always got a warning to watch out when i left the pubs on racecommon or dodworth road to set off home. More than once ive been followed home. I suspect ive had a lucky escape more than one occassion. Its not as bad as it was as the police have been a bit more proactive with the selling of ale in the numerous off licences in the area recently and the closing of that silly sishabar on peel square.
