Patrick and James are responsible for the moneyball tactics. That is to say - getting away from the highly paid journeymen and bringing talented young players in. Maurice was the link to people throughout the football world. A great asset to have at the club. An asset that most clubs would give their right arm for.
Played his part in a successful spell and took off when we probably needed him most. Hard to gauge him really.
What did he do? Genuinely interested to know. The only thing I remember him being directly credited with by the club was using his contacts to help us sign Dale Jennings.
Yes, I suppose it is. He joined us in May 2013. One year later we finished in 23rd position in the Championship and were relegated. But I'm guessing that's not what you were alluding to.
Maurice was influential in finding and signing managers. There ISN’T ONE of those managers during Patrick’s time at the club that wouldn’t have given their right arm for the talent we have at the club right now. If you doubt this - then disregarding the January 2017 team - just look at what we have now to what we have had in the past 14 years. AND - there isn’t one of those managers during Patrick’s reign - given the squad we had this January - that wouldn’t have kept us in this division. It’s clearly evident that Jose Morais doesn’t understand English lower league football. He is playing tactics suitable ONLY to higher skilled players eg Premiership players.
We employed three permanent managers during Watkins' tenure: Danny Wilson, Lee Johnson and Paul Heckingbottom. I think it's fair to say Danny Wilson was already well known to Barnsley and we didn't need Watkins to scout him out. Heckingbottom was already at the club in a different capacity. So that leaves Lee Johnson. Watkins may well have been influential in bringing him to Barnsley, I really don't know, but Johnson did apply for the position. It's all about opinions and yours is as valid as mine, but I really don't agree. I think the quality of our squad is poor. I'm not sure Jose is getting the best out of them, but I think any manager would have found it a struggle to keep this group of players in the Championship. I'm not saying they couldn't have done it, we'll never know, but I don't think they would have found it easy.
