The Board must have a wish list drawn up. According to the Chronicle, interviews could well
start as soon as next week. It also qualifies my gut feeling, that Simon Grayson is most probably
the front runner. Personally, I think we should have a press announcement by the 17th.

Any self respecting fan should know their BFC history and Clarkie was such an important part of that. A catalyst for everything that followed. You saying that doesn't half make me feel old.

 

Clarkie was the manager when I first started supporting the Reds. I don't know if I imagined it, but
we used to turn up at Oakwell every home game, really believing we could win. He seemed to have the players really
organised and fired up. To my dying day, I will never ever forget my first Barnsley game, the 5-2 home win against
AFC Bournemouth with " Hot stuff" David Currie getting four of the goals. I have never felt as exhilarated at
a football match as I did that day. The feeling was heightened on the way home, when my little boy
who had accompanied me to Hillsborough and Elland Road looking for a team to follow following our re-location from Donny turned to me and said " Dad, I really enjoyed today. Can we start supporting Barnsley please.?" He's now in his thirties with a boy of his own who is also a Red and sports a tattoo of Toby Tyke on his ankle. Fond memories indeed.

 

No Premier Leauevor Championship then? I’m sorry I think you are totally wrong. As a town we were far larger than many in the football league. We would have had someone to get us promoted. Iley would have done it if he hadn’t had his best players sold. Little wonder he left to go to Blackburn. I had so many arguments at the time with people calling for his head, due to the distructive attitude of the board.

 

It was a bit extreme as a comment. I also think Iley did a good job in laying the foundations. The club was in poor shape financially though and it took some bold decisions, a few risks to break the mould of the previous twenty years.
You're probably right in that we would have got back to the second tier at some point but it was no certainty. At times in the early seventies the club was almost dead on its feet.

 

The problem with him for me has always been his temperament. I could see him resigning in no time if he didn't get his way over transfers, or there was some bust up with the board. it's a no from me, because I don't think that he would stay the course.

 

He seems to come over more milder these days.If he ever becomes a manager I would hope he could kerb his aggression while still being animated on the touch line.Still ticks a lot of box's for me with an older head coach along side him.I'm sure he's loads of contacts in the game.
