Could be all Sunday tabloid rubbish but one of em reporting preston want £10 million for him and there plenty of suiters ! ALWAYS rated Ben but fee seems high.....or is this anothet a good example of how to get REAL cash for your players....i know he wasn't universally liked on here but even if it's half that........
I thought he was good but the fee is very high. I think this is just another example of the overinflated market in football.
I assume he's had a year and a half in a Championship side that's not getting beaten every week so he's had time to develop without too much pressure. A lot of players written off as being rubbish in their first few months can turn into good players in the right surroundings. As for 10 million, well, it's all monopoly money these days isn't it?
A player is only worth what a a buyer will pay & as transfer fees soar year in & year out it is very difficult to make comparisons . I believe for example Gareth Bale went to Spurs for £8 million pounds & his next move was somewhere in the region of £80 million , what would you think if you were a Southampton fan ? , well the truth is , both sales will have been conducted at the market value at the time & thats the same now . If sky or other backers pulled the plug , you would see a plummet in the market value of players but currently the game at top level is awash with cash & that reflects in fees . Would anyone think that Gary Madine was worth £6 million ? , Neil Warnock did , which gets me back to my origal point that a player is worth what a club are willing to pay
He's a big reason PNE have improved over the past couple of seasons. If he joins a premiership side he's young enough to be there for a decade and at a million a season plus wages/bonuses it's nothing for a top flight club.
I quite liked Ben when he was here. He was decent on the ball and had a bit of steel in the middle of the park. Something we could definitely do with. Saying that, when we basically swapped him for Brownhill I had zero complaints as I thought Josh was a much better player. 10 mill seems a bit steep.
There’s been quite a few young players like Ben over this last 12 years or so that’s been on loan at the club and showed great potential - only for Barnsley to let them go back to their parent club because we couldn’t afford the measly price tag. At that time.
I agree with the current market having inflated since the neymar deal but it is only going to get bigger and bigger, it is only a matter of time before Sky are kicked out for one of these massive global brands like Netflix or Amazon (who have a far greater revenue stream).
Agree. Brownhill and Hourihane were far too good for league 1 in that last 6 months of the season (as were most of the team). Their improvement was pretty incredible.
Our local paper reported recently that £10m in quite some way below our valuation. He's a fan favourite and just not for sale ultimately because we have ambitions of being up there and the fans would absolutely hate it if he was sold. Don't know how he did for you but he's been absolutely outstanding for us and is now clearly one of the best midfielders in the Championship, and still young. Sometimes you just watch him and think what a player this lad is. We always seem to beat Bristol City and dominate them in midfield, their midfield usually containing Brownhill. Lee Johnson said as much after we beat them in November, that we'd taught them a lesson in CM. Brownhill looks neat and tidy for them under Johnson but not as good as all-action as when he was at Barnsley, albeit at a lower level. LJ always raves about Pearson after our games, don't particularly like it tbh how he seems to constantly hover over players he's worked with before and rave about them when other managers get much more out of them.
Johnson **** pearson of for t h e weaker brownhill Pearson was a very good player for us although does suffer with petulance from time to time
Pearson split opinion when he was at Oakwell. He very rarely gave the ball away, but seemed to slow every attack down and only ever pass the ball sideways. I think we became hugely more effective after he left. However, he's obviously improved immensely since he joined you, which is a credit to the player and the coaching at PNE. Does he still have that ridiculous man bun btw? That was reason enough for us to get rid of him, even before taking his sideways passes into account!
Brownhill had the easiest job in the world in his time here, he was one of the weaker links in that side. Pearson was a mouthy little **** with not much ability. Didn't and still don't rate either
