As a youngster supporting the Reds in the early seventies, I vividly recall the smell of pipe tobacco wafting across the terraces. To this day whenever I get a whiff of that aroma it instantly reminds me of those days, and visions of standing up on the terrace, peeing behind the Brewery Stand, walking round at half time to stand behind the goal, the atmosphere on the Ponty, and usually walking home dejected!

Great post. For me - West Stand in the late 80's and early 90's - a mixture of various sorts of tobacco including pipes and roll-up cigs, mixed with the frying of burgers and onions with a touch of bovril. Is it me, or were the burgers back then actually really very tasty? I remember them being awesome in the days before we outsourced the catering.

I remember the smell of liniment coming from the changing rooms under the West Stand when I were a lad.

In the mid-seventies, the West Stand aroma was a mix of tobacco smoke and the tomato soup you could buy. A very unique smell which I haven't come across since.

I remember standing outside the dressing room window listening to them get their half time bollokings.

"Browny, man up. Little, try and stay on for at least twenty minutes. Millar, leave your right foot here, tha never uses it. Springett, do summat about that gut."

Sums up my memories of that time too. Unique smell and atmosphere that will never be replicated.
    Happy days :)

The burgers in the seventies were Westlers which were cooked by boiling as were the onions. I used to enjoy them back then but wouldn’t go anywhere near them nowadays.

Beat me to it lol. Some right noises coming from home and away dressing rooms. Mainly too abusive to quote.

Were they the big, thick pink coloured ones that all the stalls used to serve in the late-seventies, early-eighties?

Boiled burgers and Jim Iley? Probably a good job I didn't start going until 1987.

Not as strong as the stench that came of that wall at the back of the paddock ( brewery stand ) lol
