Did I say they should get a free pass? I was responding to the comment that "it's nobody's fault but their own"....
If you can’t understand there is a reason, you will never take steps to prevent issues ever arising. Very reactive, stick to concerning yourself with the paint on the toilet walls.
There are reasons for EVERY crime but only one crime seems to get a 'awwww bless them it's not their fault' approach taken.
Let's clean up the streets. Of drug addicts, and big-headed ***** who think they are the law....how about a few coppers on the beat?
Although drug addicts and alcoholics say they have a "disease", indeed it's part of AA and NA recovery, it's not actually true, but if it helps them to recover perhaps we should allow them to believe that? Obviously without excusing any crimes that may have been committed.
In the same way that it's nobody's fault but their own when someone becomes a violent criminal or a burglar. Often other people or past events and circumstances play a part but ultimately it is them who have free will and have chosen to make a decision.
So would you rather society focus on punishing drug users rather than rehabilitating them? Do you think they'll somehow come out of prison a model citizen?
You're going to have to explain that one because nowhere have I even hinted that any murder victim is to blame for their own death
Both. Prison is supposed to rehabilitate as well as punish. I'm just sick of all crimes except one coming with punishment one however gets a free pass and is excused by the masses. And actually I don't think all drug users should be imprisoned or necessarily punished as such but there has to come a point where that happens and that point simply has to be before they are laid on the floor in the town centre or leaning on a lamp post like a zombie scaring children.
No it's not free will at all. If someone is badly neglected or abused as a child, they're not making a rational decision to become a drug addict- its not like deciding what to have for tea tonight. Like i said in my original post, there are reasons why people end up like that, it isn't black and white as the person i was replying to made out. You are arguing for the sake of it and twisting what i said to make out as though i said we should let everything slide because they had a bad upbringing. That's not what i said and thats a different discussion completely.
Prisons are full. The Government look like they are going to finally tackle some of the cuts to mental health, which have been the catalyst for all this stuff. (They are trying to shroud the increased tax as a "Brexit Dividend". I know, we need another bus). As I've posted other threads Iran has 5000 dealers on death row & the most draconian rules re users, from flogging to amputation. There needs to be a grown up discussion of all drugs in this country. That includes prescription drugs, alcohol & what is currently deemed illegal, but millions consume, without any antisocial issues arising. Until that point, things will be bad all round. (I've had my pickup broken into 4 times this year & as a mobile DJ with full no claims my insurance on my 14 year old vehicle has risen from £275 to £1645). It's costing us lefties too.
Talk to mental health professionals and they will be happy to discuss the correlation between mental health issues and substance abuse. You are reaching for binary solutions in a digital world.
Sorry mate, but you are not really in a position to comment. A large percentage who are addicts are mostly either people who have been sexually abused as kids, had horrible experiences in the forces, people who have learning difficulties or people who have lost their jobs & find themselves on the street for no fault of their own. I doubt if you read the back stories you'd be so heartless, you seem like a nice bloke.
Jim, do you not think some people just think "**** it, I want to try x" and because it's physically addictive they ended up addicted. Every single addict can't be a victim of circumstances. It's just not possible.
I'm a vile human being according to some on here. Surely every situation is different? There's plenty of people in music who end up as heroin addicts despite having a reasonable upbringing. I've read interviews with plenty of folk in bands who started doing it either to combat tour boredom, they fell in with wrong crowd or they thought it was "cool".
