Former Welsh Rugby Union star Gareth Thomas is supporting MP Damian Collins in his efforts to introduce a Bill in Parliament to make homophobic chanting at football matches illegal. How do we rate it's chances of yielding positive results if it does become law.? https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-politics-44577213
I don't understand the need for the law. If something is illegal why does it need to be made illegal in a specific place at a specific time? Theft of a motor vehicle is against the law, they don't then bring in a law saying theft of a motor vehicle whilst attending a football match is illegal
football matches is a different world. robbing people any other time would result in a prison sentence
I'd rather people that go to a football game having the ballax to tell anyone making a racist / sexist / homophobic chant to shut the **** up. THat's what I do.
We could also do with stewards who are prepared to intervene where necessary. I’ve seen people leaning into the dugout hurling abuse whilst the steward looks on awkwardly from less than a yard away. They simply aren’t fit for purpose at Oakwell and are employed to tick a box, nothing more nothing less.
As demonstrated at every game, unfortunately. I’m not advocating vociferous stewarding but what’s the point in having them other than so the club can say “we’ve get X number and that satisfies the regulatory requirements...”?!
But who in their right mind, on £7.50 an hour for 3-4 hours per fortnight, would wade into a bunch of p1ssed up football fans and tell them to pipe down? Wouldn't risk a crack inside or outside of work for that kind of pay.
A steward's job, as I understand it, is to provide assistance to ensure the safety of the crowd. As well as acting to ensure that people are where they should be etc, I assume their remit includes throwing people out whose actions can be deemed as compromising safety of the crowd. However, in general terms, they are not there to act as cheapo police officers. If the club want law enforcement action taken in respect of individuals acting against the law inside the stadium then they would need to pay for police officers to be inside the stadium. Its not the stewards job.
We do have police inside the ground which we pay a pretty penny for. Unfortunately they do absolutely nothing whatsoever.
Where does it end ? The sanitisation of football matches continues . Can we still sing about the Yorkshire ripper and her that wore the red suspenders ?
Same, but sometimes confronting these racists and homophobes can lead to more trouble and get confrontational.
Can be. I agree. TBH where we sit we rarely get any idiots. Its aways that are the worst. A lot of youngsters who don't respect there ate families there.
