We've not signed anyone because the new management team have thoroughly assessed the current squad, weighed them up against our L1 opponents and deemed that we're good enough as we are. People are banging on that X is too slow or Y isn't clinical enough... It's Division 3 ffs, not Prem... I'm sure that if they thought we were lacking in an area then someone would have come in by now. Now, can we just look forward to the start of the new season?
People moan about spreadsheet signings and the manager not getting a say (even though they always have. Hecky included). Club then let’s the new manager fully assess the squad before making any signings and people moan. I think the club are doing it the right way personally. Rather than sign players the manager a) may not rate b) doesn’t need for his formation or c) doesn’t need as he’s happy with players in that position. I’m fairly certain by now the positions required have been identified and the club is looking to bring the best players in that they can for those positions. We’ll just have to wait and see what happens. Personally think we have a squad of very talented players for the level we are now playing at. With proper management and tactics, and perhaps 2 or 3 key additions I’m optimistic we will be there or there abouts end of the season.
The one thing that doesn’t add up for me in the ‘let’s assess the squad ‘ scenario , is why release Hammill before even appointing a new coach? Even if we don’t spend a penny on new signings then offering Hammill the 12 month option he was entitled to seems like a modest investment to me.
Maybe so but that’s not what we are hearing from people who claim to have spoke to him about it and he hasn’t signed for another club yet either.
It's not a sensible view with some posters on here but I agree - the new coach has had long enough to review his squad and seems to be happy with what he has. He knows how to run a football team - none of us here are qualified. Of course, and none of us really know what is going on below the surface, there may be one or two new names in the frame almost at the completion stage. I don't care either way. I just want three points against Oxford, and I believe we will get them. Bradford, the same, and so on.
I seriously think we need a few back ups at least. But, I do think whatever starting 11 we put out from our current squad should be good enough to beat more than their fair share of opponents this season.
More than happy to see DS work with what he has as I too think we have a good squad for this division and some promising players coming through academy. Will be interesting to see how much game time some of those promising players get this coming season and to see how well they can do, players like DMH, Victor, Jacob Brown, Jared Bird and Ben Williams all seem to have played during preseason and hopefully can step up. However personally I would be very disappointed if we ended the window without signing a holding midfield player. We have some great creative players but we cannot go into the season without a proper holding mid IMO.
I think that our squad is good enough to challenge at the top of league one I think Morais was a terrible appointment and I would have got better results out of the players The one main area of weakness I identify is a ball winning central midfielder - we have never replaced Josh Scowen. I do appreciate that one of McGheegan, Potts, Mowatt, Bird May step up to the plate.
That I agree with, it's the only position I think we desperately need someone in. We'd have stayed up if we had Scowen last year and we still haven't replaced him.
Combination of budget, only wanting 2-3 players and the fact that any loans are likely to happen closer to end of august when that window closes
I think for the first time in the clubs history we can safely say that's probably not one of the reasons
I would be more concerned if they had signed him on a ‘just in case scenario’ than a calculated does he fit into our plans scenario
Last time we were in this division.....i made completely the wrong call. I thought we needed some physicality in midfield and a bit of know how....we signed josh brownhill!!...ooops. So I'm going to shut up and hope our new coach knows what he needs and can implement his style on the players to make us highly successful in this division. On paper we certainly have firepower.
