My mate who I;ve known 50+ years is sound as a pound in real life but when it comes to football he is a different animal.Every season he picks a player usually within a couple of minutes of someone making a bad pass then that's it the player may as well ask for a transfer because my pal will never change his mind.Years ago it was Phil Chambers. Now for people who remember Phil he was our left back in the old 4th division we got promoted to the 3rd then the 2nd ( Championship as now) and he was the most consistent steady away full back but my mate had made his mind up over 3 seasons before that he was no good and that is that. Theres too many players to mention over the years who have fell foul to my mates instant decisions.Last season was Brad Potts after a record 2 minutes in it was decided he was rubbish. If he scored he wouldn't applaud likewise if he got man of the match, his decision was final. I'll be interested who gets the seal of disaprovel tomorrow but who ever gets it his time will be over at Oakwell in my mates eyes. His views aren't only confined to Barnsley players.Over the years Michael Owen.Wayne Rooney and David Beckham have all had the same treatment with no room for argument. Thankyou for reading I've got it off my chest and I can happily let his moans go over my head for the next 9 months.I'll let you know on Monday who gets his lifetime thumbs down.
lol, so you know my best mate and drinking partner. He makes a snap decision on a players first game for us and that's it. , very rarely changes his mind.
Potts is marked for life but I'm sure at a minutes past 3 he will be joined by a partner in crime."This man is not for turning."
Many years ago, there was an old bloke in Gilroyd who had exactly the same attitude with Ronnie Glavin. This was from the moment he realised Ronnie had taken the place of his favourite player, Graham Pugh. It didn't matter what Ronnie did over the coming years, he was a poor player and not fit to lace Pughie's boots! Anyone who disagreed with him was simply showing their ignorance of footballing matters.
There were several guys who stood near me in the old brewery stand who had the same for Ian Banks - his first few games as a young home grown player he was a bit hit and miss and lightweight in the tackle but to them he never improved it used to really annoy me - he could score from 35 yards hit 9 x 50 yards passes inch perfect for the target player but missplaced one and the chorus of "F*CKING RUBBISH! ... I dont know how he keeps getting picked ...." etc would be there before you could blink. For the record I would love a 23 Year old Phil Chambers now Wonder how Brians mate rated Kevin Donovan one of the few players I never saw do anything right
If anything, I'm the complete opposite of these fans. For me, I always hope that a lad coming up through the ranks at the club or one being brought in from the outside will be the 'next big thing'. Since the Millenium, players I didn't feel like that for were for example Mike Flynn, Paul Gibbs, Fola Onibuje & Liam Dickinson.
So Wayne Rooney uniteds record goal scorer!! Beckham who could land a ball on a six pence!! Owen a ballon do’r Winner clearly he knows nothing.. my ex father in law was the same with Rio Ferdinand probably the best defender the prem has ever seen!! It’s ok disliking a player but ridiculous to let feelings towards another team to cloud your judgement of another player ends up making you look ridiculous!!
There has always been this element of scapegoatism within a vociferous minority of barnsley fans - players like Chambers, Ray McHale, Ian Banks and my first recollection of scapegoatism was that midfield enforcer Kenny Brown. I don't know what it is but this having someone to blame I think reared it's head in the form of racism in the leave vote.
My mates opinions.Owen and Rooney "overnight wonders",Beckham "all he can do is cross the ball but he can't beat a man". Can't wait to see him again tomorrow.
Some of our younger players have felt his wrath over the years.Nicky Eaden couldn't play to save his life and was overweight.Fallon "Bambi on ice" etc etc.The sad thing is when most of the players proved him wrong he could never bring himself to admit it. I'm all for opinions and views but if there constantly of the same negative vibe they become invalid to me,that's why I can switch off tomorrow and concentrate on the good things watching Barnsley.
Yep had a bloke sit behind us in East Stand, Nicky Eaden was his target..."tha cant tackle Eaden", Tha too slow Eaden, Tha too fat Eaden, how does he get a game". His comment last season.....Aye, we miss our Nicky, going down that wing, pinging them crosses in"........Bloody Nora !!!!!
