I agree with you about Davies getting slated. I hope he steps up to the plate this season and rediscovers the same form as when he first broke into the side. It’s probably make or break season for him.
I thought the second was very poor goalkeeping, it trickled past him (admittedly through bodies though). Mowatt’s ball over the top to Moore where Eastwood came hurtling out and got nowhere near the ball but clattered Moore (who should’ve probably done better with the chance) was a pretty big mistake. He made some decent saves in the game but overall I don’t think his performance was one that I watched and would get me thinking ‘we need to sign him to be in front of Davies’.
Agree with all of that. He was an excellent keeper for us up until a complete nightmare of a season last year. Such a shame we had nobody to replace him with, and his confidence just continued collapsing.
I’m not saying Eastwood isn’t a better keeper. I can only truely judge it on the game at the weekend. Where Eastwood dropped one alrighty howler that nearly led to a goal, and let in two long range efforts. At least one I would hope a top keeper would stop. Davies didn’t let any in and saved what he had to save. It’s a funny old game. Grass being greener from the field you stand in and all that.
I don’t think we need a goalkeeper. Davies in confident mood and back in form is as good as most have at this level, and in Walton we have someone who has shown he is good enough to step in if there is a crisis of form or confidence. If Walton had been played earlier last season they both would be in a better place now i’d say - I’m just glad Townsend broke his hand in that ‘training ground incident’ otherwise we might not have seen Walton at all. Davies continued to be selected when if truth be told he’d have probably dropped himself. He was absolutely shot mentally and lacking any confidence. He’s recharged now, I’d persevere with him, especially if we have a settled back four he can get used to. I’m not sure we’re desperate for anyone else to be signed. It’ll be a great window regardless if nobody leaves.
I think Eastwood would do better with our defence in front of him, and Davies wouldn't do as well as Eastwood with the Oxford defence in front of him. All opinions mind.
This board was unanimous that we would have survived last season if we had brought in a decent keeper. We've had 90 minutes of competitive action since and some people seem to have forgotten this. Whether that's true or not, we can certainly bring better in than what we've got.
A solid back four definitely gives a goalkeeper confidence, but it works both ways. Defence less likely to panic or do something daft if they know they've got a good keeper behind them.
He was suspect with our second goal , the pass to Dougal, but the most glaring error was when he clattered Moore in the 1st half , it could easily have been given as a penalty & to be honest it could easily have ended up in the net but to be sure if Davies had committed these errors , he would have got dogs abuse
Well I must be the exception on this board , no way do I blame the goalkeepers for us going down last season , I put it down to poor management by both incumbents but as a team collectively we were simply not good enough .
He also kicked a clearance early on straight at Bradshaw or Moore which went into the Ponty and could have easily rebounded into the goal.
I don't remember one person saying this. Davies lost confidence, lost form and had a bad season but was in no way to blame for our relegation.
We were two minutes from survival, yet the keeper who played most of the games and by your own admission had a bad season can't be blamed for our relegation. What planet are you on. It will be ludicrous if we let another window close without getting a better keeper.
