Probable reason my relatives in Donny are not totally anti- BFC is that their grandparents and parents are originally from Barnsley viz: Wombwell. My wife still has family in both Wombwell and Kendray who we meet up with at Weddings and birthday celebrations, so any banter around the rivalry between the Reds and Donny Rovers is usually tongue in cheek and always taken in the right way.
Loved it when the 10 men reds knocked 4 past them though and laid to rest those two seasons against them.
That was brilliant. They had become unbearable up to that stage. I can remember one regular Donny caller on football heaven saying how they would beat us because they always beat us. That win really knocked the stuffing out of them and we had the upper hand for a good while when we played them.
I've worked there 17 years and have actually met one. Never met the other one though. Loads upon loads of Leeds fans, plenty of Man U, and a fair few Wednesday too, but for a town borderline city status, their club has very poor support.
Ronnie Moore. He absolutely loved the song we used. Quite liked the fact he took it in jest. Think he would have been gutted if it wasn't sung to him.
I remember a piece in a local rag. Leeds played Stoke away about 20 arrests for hooliganism. Figures summat like 17 from donny. 2 from worsbro and 1 ponty.
Just found this article from 2005. John Ryans "cream rising to the top" and his customary dig at us. I really disliked that cheesy grinning bleeder. He never managed to dominate Europe after all that. https://www-yorkshirepost-co-uk.cdn...as-his-heart-set-on-reaching-europe-1-2599962
Can remember going there one boxing day when he was manager, and our fans sang it to him. He loved it.
Remember Leeds playing Bournemouth and fans rioting on beach. Yorkshire post was full of Barnsley addresses of the arrested .they were naming and shaming Most were full on Barnsley fans though and went down for craic. Wonder if there’s some on here ?
He went quiet after that though, didnt we win our first three games at the Keepmoat? 1-0, 2-0, 1-0. I also recall two games at Oakwell that we won on consecutive seasons and they mustered only 1 shot on target for both games. Ryan then gave a comment about us and them dominating South Yorks and the Sheffield clubs in decline. What a pillock. He eventually resigned... at Oakwell.
The game in our 05/06 promotion season at Oakwell was one of the worst refereeing performances I have ever seen. Thanks Mr. Uriah Rennie!
