MEN's sound is great to be fair. Not been to a bad gig there.

One of the best gigs I've ever been to was REM at Old Trafford in 2008. Virtually the entire gig was filmed by various people in excellent quality. and is on youtube. That's a permanent reminder of an amazing night, that I otherwise wouldn't have.

50 metres and then some... I told one of them that she’d be better looking the gig up on Facetubegram for footage from one of the thousands videoing nearer the front with a better phone... she replied saying, “ but that wouldn’t be on my story...”. Clearly I just don’t understand. For all she knew, she could have been stood in a loud pub watching it on her phone. Her eyes were fixated on the little screen! I must just be an old fart. Lol

If it's filmed outdoors it tends to sound better IMO... im no scientist but it must be something to do with sound being able to dissipate better? Indoors it sounds terrible unless it is something relatively quiet such as an acoustic performer etc.

You’ve got it in your head though, in your heart, how you remember it doesn’t need a video. Sure it’s nice and YouTube has some amazing things, I saw a prolapse gig last week in London and I enjoyed watching it in there but I sure as hell wouldn’t be the one filming it

I think you're probably right. Must be far more echo indoors. With Old Trafford being a cricket ground, there's a lot of open space before the sound hits anything. I filmed a couple of songs at a Queen gig in Tallinn which was just in a big field, and they sounded pretty good as well. Apart from my singing, which pretty much ruined the clips!

Definitely! As I mentioned in another post, I filmed two songs at a gig once. And then got completely fed up. At least with a concert though you know something worth filming is coming. Filming a footy match, most of which is largely forgettable is completely bizarre. You must not actually see anything, even when something worthwhile does happen.

It just sounds more distorted, as though the sound can't escape. The AM vids on instagram take some deciphering as to what song it is. And i'm talking 3 or 4 different people's vids.

It's purely down to volume. It's much louder at indoor venues (unless you go stand right by the PA when you're at an outdoor event). All the audio is therefore clipped and it just sounds distorted. Stick some tape over the microphone and it'll record fine.

Was there on Friday. It’s a crap venue and the sound is average at best but still very enjoyable apart from people chucking beer on us down near the front a very stupid idea that if I caught someone in the act I’d definitely have a word. The new album makes more sense live.

Took my teenage daughter and two of her mates last night*. I've seen AM approx. ten times before and always enjoyed them and last night was no exception. I really like the new album, and as someone further up the thread suggested they're not 20 year old lads knocking about in north Sheffield anymore, their newer songs reflect that. I liked the tempo changes and switching between instrumentation, messing about with old material etc. I'm in a band and gig up to 5 times per month and I get bored of playing the same songs even with that kind of interval. Christ knows what it'd be like to have a residential in an arena and having to play the majority of the same set every night with punters demanding tracks you wrote when you were at a FE college.

I'd love to see them at the Grapes or Boardwalk again, but like one of those venues, those days are gone. They've evolved for better or worse, embrace it or disengage. I thought I got value for my ticket, although I don't particularly like arena shows, I realise it's the only way I'll get to see AM play live for the foreseeable future.

    * she says it was easily the best gig she's ever been to and one of the best days of her life (I hope behind recent trips to Wembley.......I was scared to push).

Great comment pal, I’m sure my enjoyment or lack of had a lot to do with the venue and my position at the back. Lol.

I’ve also been in a band, and looked at gigs as a way to interact with the audience, allow them to be part of the show, and experience the music. I didn’t feel that the boys connected well with the audience last night, (especially us at the back). Very little interaction between songs, in fact some song changes appeared clunky. The mix in tempo for me was annoying, I like it to build to a finale, but that is just personal preference.

I’m glad your daughter enjoyed it, clearly Wembley was The best day, not just one of the best days... but you’re right not to push lol.

Chris Rock and Jack White are amongst a number of people who recently have made it a rule you have to hand over your phone when entering the venue to stop you videoing it and if you are caught using another phone, you are thrown straight out no questions asked. It's a super idea that looks like spreading and will eventually become the norm so everyone is concentrating and enjoying what they are watching, instead of filming grainy footage as a wanabe cameraman.

Well I really enjoyed it anyway.

Think they only did 4 songs off the new album which I’m not keen on so that worked out well.

They did 6 off of AM which I loved so that was good.

The only real criticism for me is that they didn’t do ‘When the sun goes down’. It’s one of their biggest songs & a tune that gets all the crowd singing along. To me if you go see them live then it’s one of a few of their biggest songs that just has to be performed.

The mobile phone thing doesn’t bother me, I’ve never understood the ‘watching it through’ argument, just because you’re filming a bit of a song doesn’t mean you’re just watching your screen. Most people are capable of filming something without having to constantly look at their screen. As long as they aren’t hindering anyone else fun what’s the issue?

Throwing beers a strange one & not for me but it’s been going on for 15 years whilst I’ve been going to gigs so I can’t see it changing anytime soon.

The phone thing only bothered me because the screens were so bright, they kept getting my attention. People are capable of filming or taking a photo without using the screen, but those around me weren’t. I also understand taking 30 or so seconds of video if you really want, But again this was every song with the people stood on the row in front of me.!

When the sun goes down should have been played. They did Mardy Bum on Friday night too, I was there in person on Saturday!

Been to three gigs at Sheffield Arena. Generally I am not fan but I saw Metallica there and the sound was decent if memory serves. Saw iron maiden last year and the sound was poor.

Has anyone been to the Brudenell in Leeds? Must be the most overrated venue in the country. It's like watching a turn at New Lodge WMC.

Best venues - cockpit (RIP), Astoria, Manchester Academy. For small gigs Manchester sound control is a great venue.

Leadmill for me, layout is great, even if you're at the back you're only 20 yards from the stage.

That's a crazy league table. Assuming it must be 5-a-side.
