If the plane had already moved away from the terminal, the logical thing would have been for another passenger to have sat there to diffuse the situation and then any action be taken once the plane landed in the UK.

I do have a few issues with people passing judgement just on the basis of this video.

Firstly, the video starts part way into the incident, so we have no idea what caused the outburst (which I agree was unacceptable).

I say this because everyone has completely ignored the other woman calling the bloke a dirty tramp and that he smells. Regardless of whether she had issues over his personal hygiene, that verbal outburst was equally as unacceptable as the racist line from the old bloke and could have been made privately to the steward.

Like I pointed out, we only got a snippet of the full incident so the full story is unknown.

But from the video, my point is there was more than one person out of order and the whole thing should have been better diffused / dealt with by the air crew.

Imo I thought the lady handled the situation brilliantly .
She shouldn’t have to have moved but she did .but she should have received justice for this mans actions and the fact the air crew didn’t request a greeting party for this man or if they did it wasnt forthcoming.
This could have been a nasty violent situation with the words the man used the lady diffused that by unselfishly taking herself out of the equation and deserves credit and more importantly justice for the abuse she suffered .
If the man has issues a judge would have been the best person to gather reports and advice and adjudicate appropriately.

Yes, I was actually meaning the other woman who was shouting at the start of the video.

I think that was her daughter who was rightly angry and distressed as to how this man was addressing her mother.
If the man had been physically violent rather than verbally violent then that was cause for other passengers to maybe get involved and try to restrain him.
As he was being verbally abusive I thought the lady acted with great restraint and dignity and should have had her abuse and complaint heard by the proper authorities imo

Demeaning comments about someones appearance or hygiene expressed from someones personal view which may be wrong or just made out of spite can be quite equally offensive as something another person deems to be a racist comment. I would find a demeaning comment made against my character or appearance far more hurtful than one made around my race or ethnicity. It's not for anyone else to tell me otherwise.

Really ? Appearance I can agree but if you stink that has an impact on other passengers that can be addressed by soap and water. The colour of someone's skin is not a choice therefore racist comments are far more detrimental.

What if he has a genetic pre-disposition to sweat or has particularly bad odour through no fault but his genetic make up - or indeed a disability which prevents him from washing - or some other medical condition.

It could also be argued that afro carribean folk - particular those of the windrush generation - are that used to be being called all sorts of racist names they have become habituated and numb to it.

Frankly the world is so full of so many different people with different experiences and sensitivities and conditions how you can form a league table of how hard people are allowed to take insults is quite a strange concept to me.

Sorry Old man who smells with incontinence brought about through some cancer - your only allowed a level 2 reaction to being called smelly.
However this old afro carrbean lady - who you called Black - is allowed a full level10 reaction according to the Guardian "naughtiness of various insults" gauge.

No - I don't know whether it is or not - on either party - that's the whole fecking point.

Perhaps people should find out - instead of jumping to conclusions without any evidence to the contrary.

    Like idiots do.

Makes no odds what colour I am... Racism isn't a one way thing. Carlycu5stard nailed my point, above.. Medical conditions etc, may mean someone has certain attributes they have no control over. Just saying you can't be selective about how offended people are. Everyone is different and their reactions are all unique. Treat everybody with the same respect you would like in return is my way of living.

Except it does. As a person in the majority who is never subjected to racist abuse you don't get to decide what level of offense she is allowed to take.

It's like saying that homophobia isn't offensive because if someone called you a straight ******* you'd just laugh it off.

The real truth is that there is nothing to be gained by sharing things like this on social media.

Clearly the actions are terrible, whatever the cause, but the victim & the perpetrator are not going to be changed by sharing it for the better.
