    I live in South Derbyshire (since 1983), before that Cambridge (1978) and before that was a student in Newcastle. I left Bolton on Dearne for Newcastle in 1974 and (apart from a few months in 1978) have not lived locally since then. My dad took me to see the Reds in the mid 60s when I was at junior school. I had a brief spell of following Leeds in the glory years (never went to games though) but always looked out for Barnsley's results. I went with my dad to Clarkie's first 4th Division match in 1978 and was immediately hooked. Since then the only other team that means the slightest to me is Atletico Madrid (my youngest lad is obsessed with them).

    I was born and raised in Doncaster until I was 15 and going to watch the rovers( so I can call them pikey ******** 'cos I am one) moved to upton then all over via the army, and moved to Barnsley in about 1980 while still in the army ( ex wife) and started to go watch the reds when I could ( bit hard from hong kong though) I can say in all honesty as soon as I set foot in the ponty all those years ago I felt that I had arrived home

    Ha you should have gone a few seasons before - I watched almost every home game under Jim Iley(out) so felt I had earned the success when Clarke and Hunter took over.
    Had a period in the 90's when I didn't get to many games due to being down south and not enough time and money but I've had a Season ticket since we came back from almost going under as I realised how much I would miss us if the club wasn't there. Also its a great reason to come up and see my parents and go to the match with my Dad like we did all through the '70s and early 80's (Dad never stopped of course as he still lives in Wombwell)

    I do still go to games to watch other sides playing - went to watch Liverpool in the early 80's when I lived there as a student and still look out for their results but never got the same buzz and I go to watch QPR a few times a season with a friend who is a lifelong supporter and thoroughly enjoy it - though its not the same - I dont get stressed like I do watching us. ( I particularly enjoyed their 3-0 win over the fowls last week for example - much more than had I gone to Shrewsbury by all accounts )

    I have fond memories of the iley era. That's when the "bug" really got me and I got to see Brian Joicey hit 30 league goals.

    Just came back to Ireland on the overnight ferry from Holyhead. About 20 guys all with the United gear on talking about how "we" beat Everton. **** off lads, you're Irish. Grow some balls and go support Shamrock Rovers or St Pats or some other club actually on your doorstep!

    Spot on. Fans like them laugh at disparity between clubs, but it's their likes that are the cause because they're putting their money into travel companies and a big club, while their local ones struggle and the league never improves.

    Also, Man united and Liverpool must have so many "fans" all over the UK that wear the shirt, but only ever watch them on the telly. So many small clubs could benefit from their support, even on an irregular basis.

    You go on Irish forums and they all moan on about how crap the League of Ireland is and how useless the national team is and then they go and pump their money into United, Liverpool and Celtic via Sky or trips to the UK.
    I watched Shamrock v Waterford last week. Cracking new ground, good atmosphere and some nice football but they'd rather watch United on the telly.

    I started going under Iley but can’t really remember it. My dad tells me that neither team scored in my first 4 games... I did genuinely believe that his name was Ileyout for a bit.

    75/76 we drew 3 0-0, (Workington, Exeter, Swansea) that was just before Marine stuffed us int cup and then there was a 0-0 later int season.

    Why not? You both physically support your local team don't you?

    Like I said at the top of the thread, we may not all see eye to eye on everything, but the reason we all post is because we all support the same club.

    I remember him not very well but even to my young and at the time enthusiastic view it was pretty dire under him. For a time I thought our name was Barnsleynill. He took over in my second season of watching us but I didn’t go to all the games the year we were relegated to the 4th division I became a regular the next season when we started in L4 though McSeveny was still in charge. Fortunately he didn’t last very long that season.

    My first experience of reds fans turning on someone from the club was Geoff Buckle. We'd had the Clarke and Hunter heydays so there hadn't been cause for dissent until then.

    I don’t think the fans turned on him per se as they did Illey but my goodness it was dour what bits I can remember anyway.
    In fact I seem to think the crowd was rather sparse it was like reserve games .
    Having said that I get mixed up with the McSevenney and Steele eras although Steele seemed to be there years when I was younger might be my memory though.
