But he's 2 and half years older. I don't know if he can still beat a man or get up and down. Certainly could no longer do the former in the championship which is where we aim to be.

If we can get him on a short contract, great. He's worth a go at this level, as you say, but if we get back up this season he'll be surplus to requirements again.

If Coppinger can still do it for Donny at this level then surely Adam can for us. I’m not talking about a long term deal - 12 months max. The key issue is to get promoted and worry about whether he can do it in championship after. It would be a minor problem compared to us having to start another season in this league

But as pointed out by others our main issue is defending at the minute, not attacking. I struggle to see how anyone could watch the Sunderland game and thought we would've conceded less with Hammill in the team. He may be a bit more experienced than some in our team but I've never seen anything in his game to suggest he'll help organise our CM and defence.

Interesting you should mention Donny. Didn't Hammill have trials there when we released him?

Quite a few league one clubs will be looking to get promoted this season, but none of them have signed him, despite his obvious class last time he was in league one.

Could be wrong, but I don't think we'll see him play for us again.

I've always thought... 3 experienced players in a side would be ideal from a game management and learning perspective... 1 in defence, 2 in midfield / attack..

Another thing in terms of game management.. Don't like having the GK as captain, can't portray messages throughout the team effectively. PLus we have seen Davies booked this season for speaking to a defender when he should have been preparing to take a goal kick..

The thrust of the Op was about the need for experience in the team and Hammill referenced as an example. Not unlike many threads this one has wandered about a bit I have contributed to that myself. Regarding Hammill, I think he would be worth a punt but I guess we’ll have to agree to disagree on that one

That's fair enough, I appreciate it may have diverted from the OP. And I can also see the argument for some more experience being needed, however, for me I wouldn't see Hammill as the one to turn to.

I would suggest an exprienced midfield organiser is our priority imho.

I liked Hammill but for the best crosser of a ball he provided very few assists - head down and released the ball far too late or made the wrong option to shoot

    We’ve had this debate.
And it was a common conversation when we only had Bradshaw playing as a lone striker.
Yes we were leaking goals at that time - but the main problem is that we had not got the forwards to kill the game.

    IMO we are currently lacking:
    1) A couple of experienced players.
    2) Wide players that can beat a defender and get good crosses in.

So why not combine the two ?

We are playing moneyball now. Will only sign a player with sell on value ie under 27ish. No loans (which is a good thing) and no free transfers of older players with said experience. Thats what the spreadsheet has set out so no point moaning about it. Oh and the hammill ship has sailed so forget it

The main problem in the last two games was nothing to do with not having forwards to kill the game. I agree we could perhaps do with a bit of experience. But I don't particularly see Hammill as the ideal candidate to fill that void. He may bag us the odd wonder goal and put in a few decent crosses in. But that's about it.

He had no target to aim for in a lone striker last season Bradshaw then we signed Moore and he spent the 2nd half of the season on the bench. The season before he played 2nd fiddle as we had to play Kent due to the agreement who got hardly any assists compare to Hammill who had a fraction of the game time. You have to put everything into context this is the most attacking Barnsley side I’ve ever seen and Hammill would be a real asset.

The funny thing is we get 1-1 a lot out wide and nobody ever looks to take a man on instead putting in a delivery which for the most part have been shocking. Lost count the amount of times our crosses don’t clear the 1st man. I’d swap Hammill for Isgrove, Hedges, Thiiam at the drop of a hat. He’s rarely injured looked as fit as he’s ever been in a reds shirt last season and would offer more than any of the players listed who’ve flattered to deceive this season.

I said I like Hammill I also think he would make the wrong choice on quite a few occasions - shoot when there should have been a pull back or a cross.

The assist thing is ******** anyway about Hammill.

When it got to around March & he’d still not had an assist (despite getting one at Preston), there was the stat going round about him creating the most goal scoring chances in the league without an assist so he created plenty of chances.

I’m sure we all remember the easiest header in the world that Harvey Barnes somehow put wide from a Hammill cross at Oakwell last season.

I don’t believe there’s anyway anyone on here can try & make out that they think Thiam’s more useful to the team in that role & Hammill would’ve obviously been more use than Hedges & Isgrove who’ve spent the most part crocked again so the only argument is wages & given that he’s playing for St. Mirren I think it’s safe to say he’d have taken a significant wage reduction
