It's a smallish battery operated flying helicopter controlled from a distance by somebody with a radio signal console.
Now I might be a little bit dim here but don't we have military aircraft that can block high power radar from millions of miles away and have had that sort of technology since WW2.... are they not able to zap a toy running off 4 AAA batteries which might use similar frequencies to a baby minder alarm?
Simple minded I may be but to hold up the workings of a major airport with a toy helicopter sounds a bit far fetched.

The size of some of the more professional drones are quite big. I wouldn't like to think of one hitting an engine turbine whilst taking off or landing.

Private ownership of drones should be banned. They are a bloody nuisance and interfere with people’s privacy.

    Completely disagree.

I've been able to get some incredible shots using my drone. Views that you couldn't even imagine. Both in this country and around the world.

They do, however needed to be treated more like a car. Licence and insurance for all.

Blocking radio signals / radar around an airport in London with hundreds of aircraft circling ...... let’s just think about that for a minute

2 things occur to me on this
    1. There has been chaos at Gatwick for over 14 hours with no flights - costing many companies and people huge amounts of cash not to mention great inconvenience and disappointment. Its disruption that can be done cheaply and apparently its difficult to find the culprit(s)
No idea if this is terror related or just an individual with no concept of the misery they are causing but thinking its all good fun but its something that is easy and cheap to dupicate at other airports - I fear for copy cats either from cranks or Terrorists

    2. Surely our military has the ability to trace the control signal why is it so hard to track down who is controlling it

I leave close to a RAF base and they have the ability to switch off drones flown too close. Have no clue in technology but they do it.

I thought I saw a snippet on tv a while back about Hawks being trained to bring down drones.

This seems to be a sustained problem so my guess is environmental activists. Whoever they are they need catching and punishing.

They can be preprogrammed on a flight path to follow GPS coordinates. Some of them are pretty large. Did you ever see this video

What do you think would happen if a drone got into one of the engines of a plane just as it was taking off or landing?
