Found this which doesn't have last season's data included, but is interesting as a guide now we're at the half-way stage. The average needed in league one for second place or higher is 88.1 Points, meaning we'd need 44 on average by now. The lowest points to gain second place was 82 as was the case with Forest in 07/8. I think we're going to be looking at the top end given the unexpected form of a handful of clubs like Portsmouth and Luton this season in addition to the favourites like us and Sunderland. www.sportbox.co/post/many-points-really-take-gain-promotion-efl/
I'll put my neck on the block and predict that Luton and Portsmouth will slip up and won't finish in the top two. I think Sunderland will win the league and we'll finish as runners up. If I had to predict a final points tally I would go with somewhere around the 86 points mark. A lot depends on what happens in January with transfers (incoming and outgoing) and keeping Dougall fit and available.
As good a prediction as any other. I will go with the suggestion that Luton will be stronger than Portsmouth in the second half of the season and will be 2nd. It will take 90 points to finish in the top 2 and we will finish 3rd or 4th on 83-86 pts.
I hope you're wrong and I'm right but of the teams around us (Sunderland excluded) I think Luton will be the most likely to ruin my prediction.
I still think Luton may well drop out too, they’ve put an incredible run together since they lost to us but they have played a lot of poor sides in that time and they can’t keep that sort of form going.
You may also find with Portsmouth and Luton that they get the problem we had the other year whereas other teams start to look at their best players. i don't know what their financial status's are currently like, so bigger clubs or clubs from the championship may start to try and get some of the better players. Of course the same could still happen with us and it will be up to the new owners to prove that what they said when they took over will still be the case.
