....... when they live in Barnsley and have no ties to those cities....... and they usually say this .........
......... Barnsley Football Club has a small town mentality - they don’t want success - as soon as they get a decent player they sell him.

Thousands of football supporters living in Barnsley have chosen to go elsewhere because of this.

It doesn’t need a business expert to realise that we CANNOT build this club if year after year after year we sell players as soon as they show willingness.

Don't recall anyone I can think of saying anything like that...most of them latch onto clubs that they see as successful when they're young and impressionable....and if they stick to them just clog up the lines of Praise or Grumble moaning that Wednesday (in particular) are a maaaaaassive club just let down by owners with no ambition always selling their best players, or not competing with Barca for players desperate to sign up to play at the greatest football stadium in existence .

No-one would ever say that Nudge. What planet do you actually live on? They'll support Leeds or the Sheffield clubs because as sadbrewer said above, they latched onto sides having a bit of success when they were kids, or more often through family ties and tradition.

It matters not that Christmas has finished; you truly are the gift that keeps on giving.

I think nudge has a point, as do all of the other posters. The reasons for us losing players to other local clubs are many and varied. It doesn’t help that year on year kids in the playground will be taking the piss out of Barnsley supporting kids for selling them their best players. If the family has ties to another club, or they have delusions of grandeur and believe the tripe from their Sheffield or Leeds supporting friends, they may choose to go to one of the “massive” local clubs. Also said clubs have flights of fancy with getting in the premier league. It does appear though that most kids want success, so support Liverpool/Chelsea/Man City/Man U. Often because their dad supports them, because their dad wanted success when he was younger... this has now gone on for generations and seems already a family tradition.

So you and everyone else on here has never heard that said !?!?!
    Yeah right, Lol !!!

Yes - there is the problem of kids from Barnsley following their parents to Leeds and Sheffield - but if people are saying that these supporters never say ‘same old Barnsley always selling their best players’ then they are delusional.

I live in the Barnsley District - many, if not most, of the people around me are either Leeds or Sheffield supporters.
Over the years I’ve heard it said time and time again.
Example - was talking to a mate of mine this last week about Thiams goal against Charlton.
He’s a Leeds fan with no connection to Leeds - and he said this - ‘arrr it won’t belong before they sell him’.

I have never, ever, from anyone, anywhere, heard that given as a reason to support another team.

Hmm. Ten years ago I decided to make Barnsley as my English team to follow. To date I have been to Wembley twice with them and saw them lift silver. Maybe you can tell me, as I really don't know how many times have Leeds and any of the Sheffield clubs been to Wembley. Oh and how many trophies have they won over the same period?
BTW I have in the past been accused of being a glory hunter.

I've got a Leeds supporting mate who now has a season ticket at Oakwell for him and his young lad. He's loving it this season. The reason he was a Leeds fan is that it's not long ago that they were playing champions league football. Kids always latch onto success. Look how many extra fans we pulled on for the premier season. I had a soft spot for Leeds in the Revie era. They played some exceptional football back then. If I was a young kid now it would be Man City or Liverpool even though I'd still want to watch Barnsley. My Wednesday supporting mates are from Elsecar and Hoyland which are just as close to Hillsboro as Oakwell so again they followed the telative success of the big city neighbours. Not sure what your point is because we're a small town as opposed to a big city. All top clubs are from big cities. We're never going to compete with Liverpool, Manchester or London.

Good Post but Leeds did not get known as Dirty Leeds for nothing. Under Revie they were nothing but thugs. Horrible side. Now this is only an opinion mate from what I saw on TV.

sorry mate but blinkers aside they were one of the most balanced skilful sides I ever saw, as for thugs everybody used to get a dig in on the opposition in those days.

Leeds were hard but players like Eddie Gray and Johnny Giles had sublime skill. Funnily enough people always thought Giles was the dirtiest of them all despite them having Norman Hunter and Billy Bremner in the side as well as Big Jack. Leeds 7 Southampton 0 sticks in the mind.

I was gutted when Bobby Doyle left us in the 70s but it's a fact of life, players move on, managers move on, sometimes even supporters move on. Personally I couldn't think of supporting anyone else even though I can't get to football that often these days, but it's each to their own. People have different levels of tolerance such as when hooliganism was rife in the 80s saw a few people drift away from football altogether
