I think Nudge, the thing with release clauses it's all about when we are signing a player / renewing a contract you need to negotiate with their agent. The amount of power you have in that position is relative to the size of club you are & the demand for the players services.
Sanchez and Van Persie went for money and trophy’s I.e higher club in a country they already knew. Henry did the same, but he had the decency to go abroad as he didn’t really want to move to a rival club - which is why he still holds respect at Arsenal still. They were all cherry picked by clubs offering more on and off the pitch basically.
Potts was contracted to 2021 (with our previospreagreed extra year) yet we are told they willingly changed that contract and inserted a release clause with 3 years left? I call ******** there
Mmm... so no move to a higher league nor to an area of the U.K. they already knew (unless you have precise info on their holiday schedules).
It is questionable. It is always one of the downsides of the "undisclosed fee" malarkey. It only leads to speculation.
Its clearly not that simple - I can imagine a release clause in case of relegation that became active in the summer but the scenario where we just added one definitely doesnt stack up. It would be great if GG or someone from the club could explain
I found it ironic it was scored by a player that was sold by a club fans in the area want to follow because we always sell our best players....
Higher club. Same difference - more chance of winning something and more money etc. Just like a Fulham player going to Arsenal - higher up the league.
It's not been confirmed nor denied there was a release clause in Potts' contract but it wouldn't come as a surprise. ALL contracts throughout football are laden with clauses, incentives and additions. Not all players will have a relegation release clause of x amount but some will if they believe in their own ability or think they can move onto pastures new relatively easily. The probability in all this is Preston approached the players agent to gauge interest. Potts was interested, Preston met a financial requirement that Barnsley had in place (by the way this is OVER 1.5million not 1.5 million on the nose, all we know is that they broke their record) the player discussed his own package then moved. Due to the contract, Stendel, GG nor the owners could stop Potts leaving unless he signed a new deal with said clause removed. Which he wouldn't do. In short, contract drawn up by player and agent has facilitated the move. Not us being a selling club nor from under the managers more without his permission. I wish the bloke all the best. Really don't see what good it does using this as a stick to smack the club with but hey ho. All speculation this by the way but it would make sense wouldn't it?
The point is ....... why do people on here speculate - when we have a CEO that should tell us the TRUTH.
Well, they probably already had an offer for Pott's on the table, and that's the only way they could release him (if that statement is true of course)
