Yes that’s correct think it was because Jim Illey (out) was impressed with Port Vales floodlights of that shape which they had for obvious reasons so could never understand why he wanted them at Well. Unless he was a closet vale fan

Ahh- interesting. I sort of assumed it was so the limbs of the V lit the touchlines better with the square block targetting the centre of the pitch?

On the subject of Jim Iley... I recall being in the directors corridor under the west stand with dad and his boss who had his young son with him. Boss's son looks up at a door and says "Who's Jiley Manager?" The dads found it hilarious.

That could well be the theory of why they chose them but I have a programme somewhere that in it he mentions the new floodlights but not sure if it was pre or pro installation and it’ll be buried among hundreds of other programmes so not gonna look but I remember something mentioned.

Didn't we have mid-week matches in the afternoon back in the miners strikes of 1972 & 1974 ?

Thanks for the replies. I'd assumed they would have been built earlier, in the 50s, as none of my older relatives - in their 50s and 60s - can remember the ground without them. I work with a few Wendies and Blunts who think our pylon style floodlights are old-fashioned as theirs are built into the stands there. I can see our style of floodlights becoming extinct as more new grounds and stands are built with the newer type of lights.

I was there I was at the front of the boys enclosure at the Spion Kop end. Didn't the sale of Tony Leighton to Huddersfield pay for the lights?

I remember the lights going up. They were paid for by this good cup run I think. I remember the Leicester game,,, We had got to the quarter finals after three replays which we won at home, but we lost this game 2-1. Which school did you go to Grandad?

I have a programme upstairs where Jim illey (out) mentions the floodlights at port vale and that he had asked the board to consider them .
The v fir victory could have been clubs justification of getting them .

I was at the game and remember Tom Finney wearing number 9 for us. According to my memory his goal was a cracking right footed shot across the goalie from the edge of the penalty area at the Ponty end. Hope my memory's not playing up again !
In terms of date, I reckon posters who have it 1961 or later are right because my dad attended the replay against Leicester City but I couldn't go because of school.....
