as the number 10 cat says they cant be all that confident though So corbyn has pushed for a vote he knew he wouldnt win giving May some appearance of support back - what exactly was the point of that I see the foreign press are scathing with Bild calling it a farce and Le Monde calling it a shipwreck - I think Shipweck is closer -no one really gets hurt in a farce and there are a few laughs - a shipwreck much better metaphor
Because now the general public gets to see what the Tories for what they really are. Don’t care about their leaders deal nor care about the public. Just the Tory party. Hopefully the beginning of the end for them now.
A couple of people have raised this and the OP hasn't got back to us. As this debate has so far been quite civil, I'll join in a bit. The treaty isn't an easy read as it isn't stand alone it basically amends the treaties of Rome and maastricht which in essence are the EU constitution. It drastically extended qualified majority voting, increasing the power of the EU parliament and commission, at the expense of the EU council of national ministers. It also established the EU as a distinct legal entity to become an interlocutor in international affairs. My own thought and that of many others was that it was a road to a European super state. It more recently has given rise through PESCO to the road to a distinct EU military capability. You really have to ask yourself why the EU would want its own army when all its significant members are in NATO which already guards virtually all its external borders
It's a sad shame Corbyn wouldn't talk to the PM like the other party leaders such as Vince Cable did. A chance for everyone to come together and try and sort out a **** storm for the good of the country and he continues to play his games. Look at the long list of messes Theresa May has made in her political career, even before becoming the PM and yet she's still invincible because the alternative party can't offer a decent leader to vote for.
My guess would be because EU member states see Trump as a loose cannon and can't be relied on. NATO is pretty toothless if you take the US out of it.
Why would Corbyn to sit round a table with her if she can't take no deal off the table? The mess we are in is because May wouldn't act sooner and get all parties involved in the deal in the first place wasting time dragging out her rejected deal that should have been voted on before christmas but she waited to pressure MP's into voting for it. In the past two and a half years she has spent more time losing seats and sneaking policy out rather than trying to get a good deal for the UK and she should have gone after her disastirous election campaign.
Was just going to say exactly the same, she’s in the **** and she’s swimming further towards the deep end, reaching out now is the act of a desperate woman and it smacks of typical politics, make the other guy look bad to deflect attention, something Teflon Teresa seems very good at.
Better late than never for him to get involved? EU is run by bullies who want to make an example of us so other countries don't think of trying to leave and they will miss the UK billions. For the good of the UK he should stop the squables and meet her in private to have a adult chat about what he wants.
There in a nutshell is why the public should not have been asked to vote. It’s not full of bullies and they aren’t trying to make an example of us.
The point of the confidence vote is the technical side of politics. Imagine the furore if he said that the Tories would win so I wouldn't bother? Now I didn't watch very much of the debate (what I did see was more Corbyn bashing by the Tories when then motion was about confidence in the Govt. and not Corbyn) but what I did see made me very relieved that I am not of the Landed Gentry. Not so very long ago (approx 24 hrs if you have forgotten) that the Govt's. flagship policy was defeated, in spectacular fashion. Yet today they had confidence (with the sole help of the bought - price £1.5bn - DUP MPs) in the Govt. Some of the alleged support that Mrs May has has been sickening how long ago was it that some of her own MPs 'rebelled' against her. Some of her opponents in the Tory party were allegedly making vile jibes or 'jokes' about her (Oct 2018) Imagine the outcry in that could have been smeared against Corbyn? I'd trust a Tory, any Tory as far as I could chuck him/her - bear in mind I have severe arthritis of the spine and have cardiological issues to boot ! Hypocrisy of the highest order from the Govt. - then again I don't expect anything else
They have to support her, a lot of them are gonna lose their seats if they had to go to the country riding on their record of incompetence in the Brexit shambles they have created . She’s only in on bought votes it’s a bankrupt govt hiding behind the division diversion they created to get in power
From a bloke who says talk and dialogue solves everything.... as said before, if labour could get a decent, believable leader maybe May would not be so non stick. As much as May wants to be in power, labour don’t.
Better late than never? He's not the prime minister... He wanted cross party co-operation at the beginning but May wouldn't have it and look at the mess she's made! If he goes into talks now without a guarantee the no deal is off the table she will just turn round and blame Labour for stopping negotiations resulting in no deal. Sit back and let the rest fight it out then another vote of no confidence when the DUP get fed up and desert the Tories.....
The EU Army idea pre-date Trump's election, bear in mind Trump at best could only be President for two four year terms, he'll be out of the picture completely in six years even if he wins again. As to the Nato question, if Nato is toothless without the USA, ( I do get your point)....how toothless would the European Army be without USA, and also UK, Canada , Turkey and Norway?
Ah the reasoned debate of the daily mail reader As many experts have pointed out the EU have actually been quite reasonable - they cannot allow Britain to cherry pick benefits when leaving something that they have been completely clear on from the beginning. They have united behind one of their smaller members to helo keep the good friday agreement. If Britain leaves with no agreement on customs a hard boarder will reappear in Ireland - it has to under WTO rules unless Britain can find a technological solution which is clearly not easy or we would already have a detailed proposal. Given Mays red lines they have actually given us a better deal than many thought having agreed to allow the whole UK to remain in the customs union for the withdrawal phase - orignally they proposed just Ireland Also since when did looking after your own organisation count as bullying - we are leaving they dont want us to but given that they are they have to secure the best deal for the EU If anyone is guilty of bullying its the ERG and some others in our government not the EU
The right wing media machine worked on you I see. Try watching EU parliament, then the commons... See the stark difference.
Mmm, so what you’re saying is he should do what’s best for him, not the country, which is exactly what everyone is criticising MP’s for. If Corbyn is genuinely interested in what’s best for the Country he should be sitting down and making a difference from inside the circle rather than throwing stones from outside.
