It looked like Wilbraham used his arm to knock Davies as he was attempting to catch it. Foul? Yes, but I'd have been moaning had it been given at the other end to be honest. Credit the team for blocking with whatever they could.
Did look a foul to me, Davies caught it and while mid air their player has jumped/nudged into him... But the players didn't seem to contest it on the replay, not sure if they did after the ball was cleared and if we can't decide between us, how can the ref get that in 1 glance. But agree with Conan that just because the keeper drops it, doesn't make it a foul, and in most cases keepers are too overly protected. Can't believe the scramble was only 6 seconds, it felt like forever.
Definite free kick. Laws of the game mean you can’t challenge a keeper when they’re off the ground, hence why there’s perceived to be so many soft free kicks.
Watching it again from the other angle in the matchday recap vid, I don't see how that's a foul on Davies. He's infinitely better than last season, but he made a dogs dinner of that...
How though? He launches himself at the ball, totally misjudges it and essentially palms it back into the middle of the box. Honestly, if you've not already, watch the Matchday Recap on youtube, it's at the 8min 30sec mark. It's plain as day, never a foul.
Wilbraham, their 18, uses his arms on the back of Davies' arms as I saw it mate. We'd never make VAR work on here!!
Ha, fascinates me how folk can see the same incident but get different takes on it, one of the many things about football we all love I guess!
I paused it when the incident happened. Davies off the ground, gets hands on it, Wilbrham challenges him in the air, Davies drops the ball. Not sure how you can argue that it’s not? Soft, but a clear foul because you can’t challenge keepers when they’re off the ground.
Looks to me like he's fumbled it before he's touched. Maybe these old eyes aren't what they used to be...
Which law is that? A goalkeeper cannot be challenged when they have the ball in their hands. I can't find anything in the laws of the game saying goalkeepers must not be challenged when off the ground
Personally I don’t think it was a foul but I’m surprised the ref didn’t give it because Goalkeepers are overprotected in today’s modern game
I was a keeper years ago and got battered every game. I also tried refereeing, but gave it up because of the abuse. The alleged rule about challenging the keeper in the air was a myth, as you suggest, but there was an unwritten rule amongst refs that the keeper should be "protected" as he couldn't use his arms to protect himself. Anyone who saw the famous "in goes the cross, swirling towards O D E J A Y I I I I I" goal against Chelsea could be in no doubt that challenging the keeper in the air is allowed.
On the basis that we see Goalies given fouls every week because the forwards breathed on em a bit hard it was a foul....but it wudnt av knocked the wife off her bar stool Saturday afternoon int Chennels….sure we'll see lesser offences given against us over the next few weeks and the guys round me will refer back to this as an example of us and them, Always unsure when Davies goes for a catch...oooooo
