I think the league table hints that we haven't missed AH. He was on big money too by all accounts. The club took the decision to go down a different route which has seen the emergence of Potts who we've sold on for good money, Brown who might not have had his chance had AH stuck around and of course Thiam who has thrived in that left sided role. I was a very big fan of Adam's and I would have liked him to stay. But using hindsight it looks the right call.
I still don’t think it was the right decision, we’ve been forced into playing central midfield players on the wing much of the season due to a lack of faith in the wide players we had at the club. We’ve got the biggest threat in the air in the league up front and struggle to get balls in the box to him (even now we still struggle with this). To judge Hamill on yesterday when he’s playing in a poor team who hardly had the ball and he was playing in a central role is harsh. I think he would have had a positive effect on us this year and whether a starter or a squad player my opinion is still we should have resigned him. Oh and another thing, our set piece delivery is shocking.
Adam Hammill is a talented player but his best position was on the wings. He was played in a role yesterday that did not suit him. As for the penalty, I have seen them given for less. What I didn't like was his spat after which did show him in a good light. But nobody can dispute he loves Barnsley football club and the way he came in with the reds players at the end just shows that. Stuart Mc Call himself will always be assosdiated with Bradford City so he must have understood how Adam felt playing at Oakwell in front on fans who the majority of which consider him a hero.
Any truth in the rumour that when Cavaré got home last night he realised he’d still got Hammill in his pocket.
Hammill what a cheat, played poor even his wife left before half time. Changed his boots at half time only to be subbed.
Wouldn`t write him of on 60 mins of football, before yesterday Scunny were the form team of the division now who would have thought that on their performance. Its all history he has gone, but dont see the need for ripping into someone who will live long in the memory of Tarn fans.
I think the best thing Hammill did yesterday was when he tugged on Cavare’s goatee in the first half, made me chuckle.
Right decision to let him go. I have always been a big Hammill fan. Adam was a great servant to our club. And very greatful for what he did for us. Although a very skilful and influential player. He is a moody player. This can be both a strength and weakness. I lost a lot of respect for AH after the spat with Becky when he was subbed. Lets face it, he is a league 1 legend when he had his had his swagger on, but always struggled to make impact in the championship. You could see frustration in the way he approached the game. Often working to hard and trying to go it alone. Under Stendel, we play with discipline and very much about the team rather than channel all play through one or 2 individuals. AH wants to play ever game and not sure I would want either Brown, Thiam, development to suffer.
Let’s look at the history. Late 2017 - two great wingers in Barnes and Hammill - and in the middle an Umper Lumper - Tommy Tappit Bradshaw. Early 2018 - one great winger in Hammill - but two great strikers in the middle in Moore and McBurnie. Unfortunately Morais decided to put Hammill and McBurnie on mostly defensive duties - resulting in Hammill often gesturing at the dugout. The 2018/2019 season - Stendel reverts back to playing two great strikers in the middle in Moore and Woodrow - but he decides to let the only winger (Hammill) at the club that has the ability to cross a ball - to leave the club. So to sum up - we have had great wingers and great strikers at the club over the last couple of seasons - but we have either not had them on the pitch at the same time - or they have played out of position. Hammill with Moore and Woodrow in the middle would have absolutely MURDERED teams in the 1st Division. But Hammill was allowed to leave because IMO he doesn’t fit the blueprint of developing young talent. He was classified as being too old - no matter how much he would have contributed to the success of the club. Which is troubling.
Well put. I'd have liked to keep him, but he wouldn't get in this side at the minute, which says a lot about how players have improved under DS.
Who would have thought Dougall would struggle to get in team after his performances earlier int season, he seems to have gone backwards under Stendel.
Yes, very troubling. Now you've said all that, you might be right, maybe this blueprint of developing young talent is the wrong path to take, you know, as we're only second in the league and that. I mean, what's that all about? #fukit
He scored with a worldly to stop Sunderland taking all 3 points at Scunny ground, lets hope he can do same when Scunny play rest of the top teams #agenthammil
Not sure what we’re falling out for. Great player who we will be slow to forget. I would have loved him to stay and be part of what we are doing but that’s gone now. Thanks for the brilliant memories AH!!!
This feels incredibly harsh on Dougall. Worst game in a Barnsley shirt at Oxford in a dire first half for the whole XI, but helped change the game away at Wimbledon and thought he was effective against Rochdale. I still think we’ll have games where our best option is a midfield three of McGeehan, Dougall and Mowatt with just one up front. But it’s a brave Head Coach to drop Moore or Woodrow - especially after it backfired against Oxford.
Just looking at it from a full back's perspective. You've been run ragged by Thiam for seventy minutes. Then you see the board going up and Thiam's number on it. "Thank God for that" thinks the full back. Then he sees that Adam Hammill is coming on in his place. "Oh, for f**k's sake!"
