The race for promotion is now " hotting up". Thought I'd look at the remaining games for the top seven and with no evidence to the contrary, where the potential banana skins might be for each team from within that elite group: LUTON. Home- Doncaster. Away- Charlton. BARNSLEY. Home- Sunderland. Away- Portsmouth, Doncaster. PORTSMOUTH- Home-Barnsley, Peterborough. Away-Charlton, Sunderland. SUNDERLAND- Home- Doncaster, Portsmouth. Away- Barnsley, Peterborough. CHARLTON.- Home- Portsmouth, Luton. Away- Doncaster. PETERBORO- Home- Sunderland. Away- Doncaster, Portsmouth. DONCASTER- Home- Peterborough, Charlton, Barnsley. Away- Luton, Sunderland.
Truth to tell Vesp77, I'm not concerned what the "others" do really. As I've said in a former thread, I hope we are able to take one game at a time and play to our full potential. I'm not overly worried about playing the so called " top teams" because we usually do well against them. I remain optimistic of wins against Sunderland and Portsmouth and hopeful that we can get a point at the Keepmoat. Don't like to admit it, but Doncaster played very well at Oakwell and we did well to salvage a point. It's games against the likes of Southend, Walsall, Burton and Plymouth away to name a few that concern me,because complacency can set in and we could easily drop points in those games. Fingers crossed we don't and after the crushing disappointment of relegation last season, we are all raising a glass as a toast to a welcome return to the Championship in early May 2019.!!
If you aren't worried by top teams then why do you see these as banana skins - surely it's other teams we need to worry about. Looking at out loses this season highlights that fact
Interesting that Luton have played us Sunderland and Pompy twice already. I've been thinking they would drop off all season but it hasn't happened. They have a real chance of winning the league.
Probably not been too clear on what I meant LR. It is the "other" teams I was really looking at. As an example, out of the front runners Luton play Doncaster at home and Charlton away, whilst Portsmouth look to have the more difficult games against us and Peterbo at home, whilst having to play Charlton and Sunderland away
Somebody posted a link to a stats site and it predicts Luton as champs, is second and Sunderland 3rd all on 99 points. It has us and Luton not losing another game and Sunderland one. Imagine getting 99 points and not being promoted!
Absolute nightmare just thinking about it. Brother in law went to the Charlton v Sunderland play off final in 1998 which ended four all and went to extra time and penalties, which the Addicks won 7-6 with stalwart full back Mickey Gray missing his spot kick. Our John still has "flashbacks" to this day.
I think Portsmouth are definitely looking vulnerable currently, but we all go through tough patches in the season. I keep expecting Luton to drop points, but they seemingly seem to be getting stronger and stronger. Sunderland keep edging past teams, but not playing brilliant football judging from the highlights of their game against AFC Wimbledon (who missed some sitters). I am really confident about top 2 for us currently, if we tough out the games like we did against Shrewsbury and Rochdale we should definitely be there at the end of the season. At the beginning of the season we certainly struggled to do that, and didn't really have a Plan B at times. Donny were one of the best teams I saw at Oakwell and should have probably won that game, but keeping dropping points also. Personally I think us and Luton Top 2, Sunderland 3rd, Portsmouth 4th, Donny 5th and Charlton 6th. Us and Luton are the best 2 footballing teams in the league, so hopefully that counts for something.
I hope we can go on to clinch the title and Donny go on a good run and win the playoffs.. Rotherham to stay up, Sheff Utd to blow it and we have that scenario again.. Barnsley, Sheff U, Sheff Weds, Donny & Rotherham all in same league next season..
Id prefer leeds to go up and Wednesday to get relegated, Those two clubs charging nearly 40 quid to visit their dumps is criminal.
Luton should p*ss it, they've got the best run in of all the top four sides. I expect Charlton to fall away a little bit as they have lost their star striker so I have Luton down to beat them. Donny will give them a good game at Kenilworth Road and maybe take a point and Accrington away won't be easy so I have that one as a draw. However, all other matches they would expect to win given the way they are currently playing. For us I expect tough games against Portsmouth, Donny and Sunderland but we seem to do better against the sides in and around the top 6. My fear is that we will slip up against a few teams in the bottom half of the table.
Thought it might have. Best I can find out is what radio Hallam called the big six. Us. Blunts. Wendies. Millers n Chessie. 79/80. Wit rovers missing. Edit. Since 1966 when I started watching tarn.
Yeah mines a couple of years before but I don’t think all South York’s clubs have been in the same division at the same time . I’ve gone through a few programmes but can’t find owt yet tbh . Wendy’s were always in top divisions when I was younger up to 89/81 I think when they came down to third but I think Donny were in bottom at that time . I’ll keep checking .
