Unless you have some outstanding young talent, the championship is such a competitive league, I'm firmly in the camp that you need a fine blend of experience alongside talented younger players. Look at some other clubs who signed older heads and not done badly.. Sheff Utd, Wolves albeit Wolves splashing the cash.. Although having said that Burton only have an average age of about 27 / 28 which sounds about right balance to me, so Clough has hardly filled the entire team with a set of OAP journeymen..
They have done well yeah but those players are still quality championship players on 40k plus a week that neither us or Burton can afford. Obviously if anyone had choice of a young defender from League 2 on cheap or a John Terry we would all pick Terry but fact is we cant afford that nor can Burton. Just because they have the lowest resources does not mean they should be relegated either. How much do Burnley have in comparison to other BPL clubs yet they have gotten into Europe. Burton and ourselves are not down because of lack of resources, we are both down as our recruitment simply is not good enough and we didn't play well enough.
I agree you need balance for sure. You cannot have a team of youngsters like we do and expect to do well in a tough league like the Championship but I don't like the idea of signing players that are well past their best. All for getting experience but that doesn't have to be someone who is past their best. My point with Burton is they signed too many players that were past it. Yes they had lots of experience but they were good players 5 or so years ago and they have signed a fair few of them. Fair enough they may not have a full squad of them but they have a fair few. I don't think Clough is a terrible manager by a long way but he certainly would not be my choice and I don't think he will be the owners choice.
The board should sanction similar level of investment this season at least to try and bounce back.. League 1 is nothing but a cash drainer..
I'm saying they have already over-performed by making it to final day and almost staying up that is above their expectations, Burnley are massively over-performing too great, I'm not saying Burton's recruitment is amazing I'm just saying if we had a few more genuine-pro older guys like Darren Moore or Jon Macken that would have massively helped the youngsters!
They were unlucky to go down. We were not. We totally ****** things up last season recruitment-wise. Not a happy camp. Yiadom should never have been captain, a want away player, over Hammill, senior pro and 100% Red. Too many players that were not ready to face the Cardiff City's of this world. We need to learn lessons.
Article around an interview with Nigel Clough in the Derbyshire Times. Having now played all the teams at the top, he says that for him, the two automatic places in League One will be taken by Luton and Barnsley, on the grounds that you're always under extreme pressure when you're chasing the leading teams. Hope he's right.
No thank you. Proper negative, and awful football. He sets his teams up to snatch 1-0 wins at home. The majority of Burton fans don’t even want him, so why would we?!
Because our three points went for a Burton on Tuesday and someone decided to cream themselves over Nigel Clough and his tactical genius
