Now this might just be me being really stupid but why do we have a Sheffield postcode, wouldn’t it be simpler to have something like BY instead
Like probably others on here I have to to work in Sheffield - I call it missionary work. The girls in the office say that they own us cos of our postcode.
Ipswich isn't a city and it has its own postcode. Personally I just think Royal Mail are anti-Barnsley. Along with the BBC and all referees. And Blackburn. Bolton too. What's Carlisle? If it's a city it's only a small one.
Bizarre some of the post code allocations. All of Northern Ireland has BT post codes. Most post codes outside London stretch well outside the towns/cities they are named after. PE as an example is a huge area around Peterborough, well beyond the town itself, as far away as Skegness in fact. It’s hardly unique to round here. The S post code refers to sheffield but it covers Rotherham, Barnsley, and technically part of Donny (Mexborough) within South Yorkshire, Chesterfield in Derbyshire, Worksop in Notts. DN might refer to Doncaster in name but it covers a lot more area outside South Yorkshire than within it. Most of north Lincolnshire, encompassing Scunthorpe, Grimsby, Cleethorpes, Immingham, Gainsborough and all in between have DN post codes, in East Yorkshire there’s Goole, Retford in Nottinghamshire. There are some strange exceptions though, the areas around the West Midlands and Greater Manchester/Lancashire seem to have a lot of smaller post code areas, the M and B post code areas are comparatively small given the size of the cities, but I guess the sub areas need to be smaller due to the high number of addresses needing post codes within them. Not sure Dudley, Walsall and Wolverhampton all need unique ones, nor Bolton, Oldham, Stockport. SK, for Stockport, is miles bigger in area than M which covers two cities, Manchester and Salford. No idea how it was decided but I’m guessing the people who did had roots around the outskirts of Manchester and Birmingham, and certainly not Rotherham or Barnsley.
Could it be that the sorting office is wherever the post code relates to? I mean is the sorting office for Barnsley in Sheffield? Donny has a sorting office of its own. Does Barnsley? I might be wrong and every town has one.
I've just googled and as they got introduced in Victorian times and spread out from London ( who have w for West and se for South East not lon for London ) to districts with large enough populations. So no slight on Barnsley it just wasn't as populous.
Nowt wrong with being part of Sheffield. We are fortunate to have two great cities nearby north and south of us - Leeds and Sheffield. So one would expect the town of Barnsley to be thriving. But it’s not.
Highest increase in house prices in Yorkshire due to influx of people outside the borough. Biggest rise in footfall due to improvements in town centre. ( which can only get better). But why are we fortunate to have 2 great cities. To be honest couldn't care less. (That's not to say I avoid these places I may venture out on the odd occasion)
Yes but your from the dirty Dens Park area of Sheffield aren't you Ian. And btw, why does Sherburn in N.Yorks have an LS25 Leeds postcode!.
