He was a very slight figure ghosting around the pitch, often getting the better of much lesser talents than him. He looked too fragile for the rigours of the Fourth Division and was clattered far too often, with very little protection from referees.

RIP Bobby Doyle. It was a real pleasure to watch him parade his skills in our red shirt.

You have to be a certain age to remember Bobby playing. He was a class act in midfield.

Very sad, a quality player and one of my first Oakwell heroes. Had to retire early at 33 following a bad leg break, but still clocked up 537 league appearances.

One story I remember about Bobby was an away game at Feethams, Darlington. A group of us fans were there early, when the team coach arrived. Bobby got off and immediately went to the boot and helped carry the kit basket. We said "We're not 'avin that, save thi legs!". We ended up carrying the basket right into the changing area. RIP Bobby, you've gone far too soon lad, you were a great player for us. Sincere condolences to your family and friends.

Think he was the hero player, just as i started to watch us as a young lad, didn't he have a really hard shot?
Typically we sold him then the next hero as i remember seemed to be mick butler.
I can also remember my brother telling me Bobby was really cool and used to go to "changes"nightclub in town

Very sad news - I remember him from when I used to stand in the old brewery stand as a schoolboy - right at the front just looking over the wall. Far too young to be leaving this life

I remember him being heavily involved in our throw-in routine carried out near the opposition corner flag! It was a great move, often worked but i can't remember us ever scoring as a result!

Bobby made the fourth division team of the year in 1974-75.

I attempt below to show the full Div 4 team for that season, to be picked alongside Durban and Gordon Hodgson was some achievement. Hodgson was head and shoulders the best player in that league that year.

    Pos. Player Club App.
GK Peter Grotier Lincoln City 1
DF Sandy Pate Mansfield Town 1
DF Jimmy Giles ¤ Exeter City 2
DF Trevor Storton Chester City 1
DF John Breckin Rotherham United 1
    MF Bobby Doyle Barnsley 1
MF Alan Durban Shrewsbury Town 2
MF Gordon Hodgson Mansfield Town 1
FW Derek Draper Chester City 1
FW Ray Clarke Mansfield Town 1
FW Paul Stratford Northampton Town 1

Other than Bobby, I only remember Alan Durban from that lot. Was a long time ago I guess!

You have clearly been more responsible than I may have been.

    Regrets, I have a few,

    ...

but then again too few to mention.

Met my wife in the Changes. Seemed to spend a large proportion of my youth in there.
