You don't understand PTSD if you think it's just a case of picking up a phone. There are some very good organisations to help, especially now but the last thing some ex soldiers with PTSD want to do, or think they need to do, is talk to somebody. I know ex colleagues who have suffered, I've seen it destroy them before they face up to it.

One lad (who posted on here a few years ago) had it. He ended up in prison and committed suicide. He just couldn't deal with his mental condition. He ended up drinking a lot, he became very unpredictable and at times violent. In the end it was too much, he didn't seek help and he took his own life.

It's such a complex condition and when it affects soldiers, who are notorious for not asking for help, it eats away at them, it breaks them down and can destroy them and their families.

 

One of the most shameful episodes of the pre-war years was Britain’s refusal to take Jewish refugees from Europe, for example after the Anschluss. With the Daily Mail in full cry we tightened up our immigration policy and turned away thousands of Jews from Austria who later died in concentration camps. Plu ca change, as those Johnny ungrateful foreigners would say eh?

I’m glad you bring up the British armed forces.

Nearly half a million people with brown complexions (by which I mean Muslims) served in the trenches for the British Army in the First World War.

Over five million (yes, million) Muslims served in the military in the Allied forces in WW2. 30%, over 1.5million, were killed.

Over 40% of the British Indian Army were Muslim. Little quote from Winston Churchill “We must not on any account break with the Moslems, who represent...the main army elements on which we must rely..." - he was talking to President Roosevelt.

There are also Muslims serving today in the British armed services. I’m not sure their colleagues serving with them in active war zones will be too concerned about their complexion.

 

Who would you expect to have done so? Remember the status of the British empire in relation to the rest of the world at the time, and also the fact that exclusive of South America, almost all of the rest of the world was involved in the war, or synonymous regional disputes.

Also, had it not been for US and Russian intervention, we would almost certainly have lost the war. The romanticism of plucky little Britain standing up to Germany by itself is a falsehood.

 

Imagine if your country was unable to do that. Where would you go?

 

Considering that mainland Europe was occupied by the nazis at the time, I’d be interested to know which country could take them ?

70% of German casualties occurred on the Eastern front. By the time of D-Day Russia had basically beaten the Germans in the East and we were invading to stop them getting as far West as Paris. Certainly we supplied a huge amount of materials and kept some German divisions occupied on the coast and in Africa but really that was small potatoes compared to the huge numbers in the East.

 

Not strictly true. Britain accepted 75,000 jewish people between 33-9. Britain could have done more without doubt, as could america.

It must be remembered that our soldiers have to carry out our dirty deeds & live with the consequences of them too. Politicians just wash their hands of their decisions & actions.

Some, like Blair get appointed as middle east peace envoy. How ironically tragic is that.

Non of this far right stuff would have happened if we had refused to back Bush in invading Iraq.
The soldiers & support service personnel are still paying in their personal lives & getting very little support from consecutive governments, hence many being on our streets.

 

This government, aided & abetted by the UKIP morons, are intent on dividing us - our own people need our support as do the innocents who either need refuge or are to die. Farage banged on about a massive queue of “foreigners” & often lumped eu migrants with refugees as it assisted his narrative of bile! Don’t let them do this.
