We are always lead to believe by those in the know that Manchester United are one of the biggest or are the biggest club in the world. So how come the result in Paris last night is being heralded as some kind of miracle by the media, pundits players, fans. Conclusion - Low expectations or how the mighty have fallen.
The term refers to the amount of followers around the world. Absolutely massive in china etc. ok armchair followers in general but in terms of merchandising no one else come/came anywhere near. I still think that’s the case even with the Spanish clubs dominating Europe over the last few years. Edit just googled it and it appears the 2 top Spanish clubs have just taken over that mantle of most followers.
The £89 million spent on buying Pogba was reported to have been recouped in Shirt sales and merchandising within a week of the announcement!
They are the biggest, It feels like Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has been on Sky Sports News everyday for the past month or so. Biggest doesn't always mean best. Over in the States the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Yankees are two huge franchises, they don't win everything all the time, but when they do win a big game or cause an upset, chances are it will be talked about and blown up as some kind of miracle much like Manchester United last night. See it's BECAUSE Manchester United are so big that winning will get a higher status. That said, it was a great win. Just because Manchester United are a huge team doesn't mean they were expected to do that.
More to do with the fact they had 10 1st team regulars out injured and no team has come from behind to win when losing the 1st leg at home by 2 goals or more.
The media have their favourites at every level, we’ve always had short shrift as little unfashionable Barnsley dont warrant it. Take Look North ( or look leeds as we call it in our house ) imagine if 10 man Leeds Utd had won 3-0 away at the weekend, Harry would have been w@nking himself silly live on air. As it is, barely a mention. Twas always thus.
