I’m currently laid up at home so it’s good to have some sound judgement available regarding young players. Particularly when they are deemed not good enough before I’ve even seen them. Thank you.

Williams did ok. Made some good runs and was ignored.

All did well, was especially impressed by Styles, looked so comfortable on the ball and linked up really well with 1 or 2 others instantly

Didn't expect williams to come on as a winger, but was pleasantly surprised, looked to have something about him there

He did okay, just looks light years away from regular first team football at this level. He needs games to develop. I can only see a loan deal next season for him if we get promoted.

I must be on my own here but I think Williams looked really good when he came on - I was impressed. He looked pacy and made intelligent runs.

Green is still very raw but he did well - he needs time to develop. Very unlucky not to score.

I left the match on 80 mins so didn’t see Styles but so far have read that he reminded people of Darren Sheridan, Paul Gascoigne and Martin Bullock.

An amalgam of those is one very good, funny looking and bizarre footballer!!

As young lads who haven't played much football of late in our team i think Williams and Styles did great. Both got into he game quickly, contributed to chances created and worked hard to help defend. I have to say i was impressed with both. Green i think took the first half to adjust to the style and for the team to adjust to his style. But he persevered and actually got stronger in the game and became a threat. I also thought overall he was good. Remember when Brown came in and look at him now. Look at how McG has got his fitness back and see how Ben Williams improved we have to say that what we saw yesterday was the start and platform for them all to grow. We should be cognisance of that (obviously some aren't that patient)

All three did well, all seem to fit in with the type of football we play, I'm confident we can get through these next 2 games with them replacing Brown and McGeegan.

So people can only deem them good enough before you've seen them? Ok.

To be fair it's way too early to make an assessment of any of them either way. Styles may turn out to be great but after 10 minutes in a match that's already won it's pointless to judge.

    I know it's scary.
To be honest I'm as big a culprit as anyone else for thinking someone's going to be great or rubbish after a couple of games. The reality is you can only judge after they've had a few months in the team. McGeehan being a case in point.

Green did well, as said- grew into it, outrageous pace if we can find him some space to work with.
Williams again good showing, touches of confidence glinting through
Styles will go a long way in the game, I'm sure. Classy, confident, calm and collected. Very intelligent player. Lot of "reminds me of..."posts about him. For me- a teenage Rooney?

Agreed. I think Williams did OK. I agree that Green is easily knocked off the ball, but the lad has pace to burn. Styles looked very composed on the ball & my worries about midfield cover are somewhat assuaged.

It's a problem though if too many players need to step up at the same time - as last season showed. The way we are doing it now is preferable- giving players cameos when we're not actually relying on them. Green could be fairly regular from now until the end of the season but the other two will probably get twenty minutes here and there.

Green needs games to get used to defenders roughing him up a bit. To be fair he improved in that regard second half - he even won some headers against defenders he was at least 6 inches shorter than. He’ll win free kicks and penalties galore, he’ll play Tuesday I think.

Williams surprised me, saw him as a full back primarily, but coming on further forward he didn’t look out of place. Not enough to judge but he looks decent.

Styles, only had ten minutes, but he got stuck in straight away, wanted the ball, put a ball out wide under pressure with the outside of his left boot the first time he got the ball, looked confident and competent.

Don’t think styles or Williams are starters yet - but if we got any more injuries or suspensions and had to play them, it wouldn’t be a Southend situation. They’re good players. If we had to play all of them at the same time it would be an issue, bleeding one or two in if we lose one or two, we’ll be fine I’d say.

But no one is asking whether he'll be a first team regular. No one knows that, but Stendel obviously trusts him.

The question was how did he do. My reply was he did ok.

Not at all. I absolutely rely on the infallible judgement of people like you. I do sometimes wonder why the club employs professionals to assess the ability of individual players when it would be much cheaper to ask a panel made up of our more knowledgeable ‘fans’ who are able to come to a conclusion based upon a brief substitute appearance. It’s not like anyone has ever been proved wrong in the past. Not ever.

You're not, that's what I saw too. Not sure whether or not he's got the skill because he wasn't passed to when in decent positions. He did make the right pass when he was on the ball though, showing a better reading of the game than some of his more experienced team mates (you're still shooting when you should pass lads). Intelligent runs, full of energy, he did really well. No idea if he's going to be good enough, much too early to tell, but he staked a claim to be regularly on the bench and brought on as a sub.

Green got fouled almost every time he touched the ball, but his run and shot that hit the post was beautiful. Hope he plays again Tuesday.

Styles oozed style. Is he strong enough, fast enough, fit enough? No idea. But he's magic with the football.

The OP asked for opinions from other posters - not an assessment from a professional coach - so I've no idea why you've brought this up. Oh no, wait, I have actually. It's because you don't like it when people don't have 100% positive opinions, so you attempt to denigrate them as being less educated or informed by comparing them to the opinions of professionals. Utterly pathetic. Much like you referring to these people as "fans".

Styles? Is Jared Bird injured or now surplus to requirements?
