Wrong!! My great grandfather walked to Pontefract barracks to enlist on day one of the Great War didn’t wait for the pals initiative. My grandfather was called up and despised Hitler and everything he stood for including sectarianism and racism
Well we have one thing in common - my grandfather enlisted at Pontefract Barracks too. He ended up rather uniquely winning the Croix de Guerre when he decided for some reason to fight for the French. Anyway, their motives were far different to those of today.
How can you be so sure ? I worked in the mines with some great men . I worked with veterans of the Spanish civil war . Suppose your gonna tell me their motives were different.? I find your reasoning arrogant tbh I have worked and socialised with some very principled people so how you can tell me that their beliefs were different when I have first hand knowledge of these giants principles is gobsmacking.
No it's not gobsmacking at all. Your point was about "populism and expansism" - whatever that is - and those down the mines would not be using those phrases - my grandfather never did and he can stand proud with any other man, before you start pulling rank (he worked in the mines too btw). Their sacrifices trump ours but were made to allow us to air our own views. Be it about populism, expansion, or anything else. They weren't all socialists or revolutionaries. They generally had no choice but to fight.
Yes it is gobsmacking your colouring a whole generation as they can’t have the same views as we do today and I’m telling you first hand they can . I worked with these people I’m quoting , my beliefs came from these people they were my peers . I’m not pulling rank as you say about anything I’m quoting directly these people . Don’t tell me these people who I grew up with who your grandfather and his generation knew had no choice and that they only went because they were called up because that’s a lie. Many miners believed in what they fought for , I knew workmates that liberated concentration camps and the trauma they went through and the hate of nationalism because of it
Getting a bit personal there Marlon...remember that they all fought for the right to free speech. Goodwill to all men!!
wanting out of the european political union has nothing what so ever to do with nazism and the naziism of the early 20th century was about german dominance and despite what tripe you peddle all farage wants is controlled immigration, and comparing that to the likes of hitler is fcukin pathetic at best
Tbf dek there is a few on here that’s peddling the German dominance card through the EU . I know it’s not your or sadbrewers stance but it’s been mentioned .
by the great war i take it you mean WW1,which was not hitlers war and neither was it about populism , britains entry was because the fuckin germans invaded belgium and britain had an agreement to protect both belgium and france, britain was also wary that the germans and their alliance with austria and hungary were a threat to our own empire.
tbf marlon i can fully understand peoples sceptism of the germans as they have a track record of ignoring treaties and doings as they so wish. They always wanted territorial and financial control over europe,so some peoples distrust is understandable.
That it’s nithing to go with hitler etc and linking it up a typical German trait to try and dominate EU
i've not said its a typical german trait,i've simply said they have a track record of ignoring treaties so i can understand some people distrust,it doesnt mean i think they'll do the same again
