indeed it does, however, thousands of troops , and disarmament of the aggressors had far more to do with it. the same thing happened after WW1, the germans were made to pay and were forced to de/militarise, however, hitler tore up the agreement,re-armed and then proceeded to take revenge for what the germans saw as a humiliating defeat in ww1.
one point i will make tho is that i'm quite happy to be in a trading bloc, after all this is what was promoted during the 75 campaign when stories of further political intervention were rubbished, as was the possible eu army and further surrender of political powers, had the common market remained just that then i would not be on here debating brexit
So Trump DID threaten to pull out of NATO. You raise the fearmongering point that the EU wants its own army and then admit that we have a veto on that. And you admit that there is a peace dividend inclusive in but not exclusive to the EU. Thanks, that's all I needed.
you really do have a habit of making words fit your own agenda dont you. i'm unsure what trumps threats have to do with the eu as all he did was put pressure on member states that were failing in their financial obligations toward nato..and from what i understand that pressure has worked as these states have now made a commitment to their spend, two of the main protagonists of a eu army, france and germany, were spending well below their agreed obligations the eu army was flatly denied for years but is now in advanced talks between merkel and macron, so in effect the eu lied, thats not fearmongering.and lets say this eh,what if we were to use our veto,do you think it will put a stop to a eu army because i dont i'd also like to know who will fund this eu army when britain, greece, estonia and poland were the only eu countries meeting their nato abligations the peace dividend as you put it is imo negligable, the real peace keeper is nato, even tho it gauls you to admit it
I dont think Trump has actually threatened with serious intent to pull out of Nato, I doubt the US political systems on both sides of Congress and House of Representatives would countenance it. Whilst The US is the backbone of Nato, they are aware they need mutual support if things go t*ts up. Trump though has a point (and I'm no supporter of his) The agreed spend per member is 2% of GDP, the US spends a lot more than that, the UK has always met and usually exceeded that, as have some other countries...without checking Canada, Denmark and Norway spring to mind...Germany though has been reluctant to meet the agreed target, considering that the major beneficiary, (had The Warsaw Pact ever invaded) was Germany itself, and the fact that Germany's economy has been easily able to meet it's obligations, I can understand why those that meet the commitment feel slightly miffed.
It certainly doesn’t suit the agenda, in one post they celebrate NATO and in the next bemoan an EU army (one that’s mythical at best) I’d say you couldn’t make it up but it seems you can!
THEY celebrate nato because it did what it set out to do and that was keep the germans in check and keep peace within europe,so imo there is absolutely no need to change the arrangements ';the times when we could rely on others are over' this is a direct quote from merkel when she issued support for the eu army , perhaps merkel needs to be told that its mythical at best, maybe you think this is made up too /\/\ btw,in the event of all out war with russia (as its russia who merkel is targetting with the need for the eu army) i would much sooner rely on nato and the americans for support than i would the french or germans, if you need to ask why then have a look at the history books.. mind you you may think these mythical too.
So we need to leave the EU because the Germans might not be kept in check anymore, right. If I need to ask why? why would I, are you the only person who knows about history? As a quick aside what did you do in the forces? Must have been very different to the one I know if you never worked with the French, Germans and the rest of Europe’s forces, nato or otherwise.
You subconsciously gave the game away regarding your mental processes there... Linking "immigration and racism" as a phrase (huge part - singular??). The two are not the same although apparently you and a number on here seem to think they are. Genuine concerns over uncontrolled, unchecked mass migration (much of which is illegal) is not automatically 'racist or xenophobic'. Having seen the damage unchecked migration on a mass scale is doing in the south of Italy given the massive youth unemployment and a country already reeling from natural calamities over the past three years and highlighting the problem does not make me racist. if you can find any of my posts that are racist' you are welcome to try. You won't find any because I am not.
Well over 5 mill now , the govt will have to take this seriously now imo . It’s better the right decision than the wrong decision whether we have one ref or three imo
actually you dont need to ask the question because where have i said we need to leave the eu because the germans might not be kept in check anymore? i havnt is the answer leaving the eu has absolutely nothing to do with that statement i have never ever been in the forces,i went into the other conscription trade, however i really am unsure what this has to do with my thoughts on a eu army and nato as a quick aside, you are the first forces person i have spoken to that is seemingly in favour of a eu army,i take it you are? if not , then what is your question referring to? as my comment on the reliance of the germans and french is directed at their respective politicians and not the boots on the ground folk. all the forces people i know, both current or ex seem to think its a bad idea and that nato is the best arrangement, they see a eu army with 27 member states as a nightmare to organise and fund and that nato with the financial clout of the american as the best i also find it insulting that macron seems to think that europe cannot rely on the united states anymore and this is why he's after a eu army...i'm unsure how many dead americans it will take to convince the ***** that they are , in fact , on his side I still stand by my thoughts that it is NATO that has kept peace within europe
It’s the most signatures that’s ever been collected on a petition . And it hasn’t finished yet. I doubt a opposing petition would get anywhere near it.
Just to make us all even more jittery, there's strong rumours coming out of Westminster that the Tory Cabinet are about to turn on Theresa and demand she resigns on the grounds that she's " toxic". If that happens either the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster David Lidington or Michael Gove will be put forward to lead the party with a snap General Election taking place soon after. If that's what's likely to happen, they will have to apply for a lengthier extension to our exit from the EU. How long is this debacle going to go on is anyone's guess.
Very true, now If you could remind the racists who voted leave that immigration has nothing to do with racism that would be nice. Thank you.
When the news came out about how Barnsley voted, the shame I felt for this town was immeasurable. I tell everybody I am from Sheffield now, the only City in South Yorkshire that had the balls to stick it to the nazi right wing outers. I recommend all remain voters do the same, leave the town and go live in Sheffield. A wonderful, progressive, multicultural place with people who genuinely care others and not just themselves. For shame Barnsley, Rotherham and Doncaster.
Only shameful thing about that is lying about where you're from and letting peoples political beliefs affect how you feel about your hometown.
There is absolutely nothing wrong with mass immigration, it helps add diverse perspectives and unique cultures that compliment/better the host one. When I go to Rotherham market I see people from loads of different backgrounds all mixing together, trading and sharing their lives with each other and I wish that Barnsley had that. It’s definitely something that’s majorly missing when we look to our neighbouring cities and towns. You need to get with the times or be left behind it’s that simple.
Are you proud to be from Barnsley? The town that voted over 70% to leave? That means that over 70 out of 100 hundred fans that sit beside you at Oakwell voted to sell this country down the river. I’m staunch labour like my father and his father before. They spilled their blood to get rid of tyrants only for our fellow kinsmen to hand it to them willingly. They’d probably wish they let the Germans have this country now.
