Promotions, trophies and appearances at the national stadium matter more. If we don't go up that stat counts for zero as we will be in this league at least another season. He's achieved it, but as Barnard said in the Chronicle last week that team did it at the championship level.

Hardly his fault were in league one he wasnt manager last season.
We had one of the biggest budgets last time we came down under Wilson according to cryne and mansford and we did nothing it was some of the worst football I've ever seen at oakwell

You've got to also take into the young players he has brought on leaps and bounds.

    96/97 team under Wilson

81/82 era under Hunter with Glavin Aylott Parker McCarthy Banks et all

    Nowt much compares after that.

I like Stendel and his vision of how the game should be played. This team has an identity and style.

99/00 under Bassett was one of my favourite seasons - attacked for fun but ultimatley couldn't defend that well

Seems a great bloke & done well up to now but way too early to judge. Ultimately if we finish 2nd no one’s surprised. Promotion favourites due to a pretty settled squad of young players who were only going to better for more experience & games together.

I’ve been more impressed with him in the second half of the season where he’s faced adversity with Moore been out & the squad been weakened in January.

Be interesting to see how he does in the championship as I’m sure it’ll be like last time where we’ll lose a few first teamers again & he’ll really be tested. Hopefully this time round the assistant won’t take a bung, the chief exec won’t leave, the captain won’t lose the plot & the club won’t be up for sale but anything can happen with us!

Remember the seasons before Clarke, settled 4th division club, used to dream of the old days when we were a decent second division club, when Clarke signed it was electrifying, he completely changed the club mindset, brought the players that made us a great team in the early 80’s, when he left Hunter took over a settled team and got us promoted to the 2nd division, Clarke always number one too me, but do like Stendle

Done as much as we could have hoped in his first season, got the best out of his players and plays a good attacking style. Definitely better than many of the managers I have seen. But too early to put him up with Wilson Clarke or Hunter. Hopefully we will be better able to judge after a season in the Championship. I believe if we had appointed him instead of Morais he would have kept us up last year. But no way to know of course

Quite a few variables to consider.

He's broken the record for points total, but we're in the third tier.

If he gets us up and we do well next season, he'll be on a par with Hecky and Hunter for me.

Behind Wilson and Bassett because one got us in to the prem and the other almost got us back.

In front of Clark, who gets a honourable mention for bringing the club out of the dark ages so he's a 'last but not least'

Contraversial. Clarke built 2 teams - the first to get us out of the 4th Division and then the side us of a certain age all still dream about that took us out of the 3rd Division and to 6th place in the second division. For sure they kicked on under Hunter but it was the side that Clarke had built.

Hard to compare with today as I dont think Stendel has the same influence of player signings as Clarke did and signing a 28 Year old former Scottish international just isn't an option under our current strategy.

Hunter and Wilson played more attractive football but Clarke launched the club from over a decade of struggle in the 4th Division and transformed it to a top half league 2 team in 3 years -( with help from Hunter who he signed of course) - that is some achievement.

He's on a par with Wilson and Clarke for me in the sense of 'a new broom sweeps clean'. Similar to Clarke he has re-invented us and reinvigorated Oakwell.
On the playing side, he us up there with Hunter, so if the style of footy continues next season he has a chance of being my personal GOAT.

    Happy days

That's a bit harsh, it would have been enough for us just to sack him, I think.

If we don’t go up given the advantages we have he will be a failure regardless of points total.

Thats bizarre logic - so he gets more wins and far more points than any other time we have been promoted from this league (if you convert to 3 points per win Hunters promotion winning side in 81 got 80 points and we are already on 88) if he happens to find by a freak set of circumstances that 2 other sides also excelled and his record breaking performance wasnt enough this year its hardly he has failed just that someone else has had an extra ordinary success ( in particular Luton)
In any case many on here expected us to struggle this season as our players arent good enough etc I will be disappointed if we dont go up but I wont claim the manager has failed

Dunno about controversial. I actually gave Clarke credit for his first tenure, but the others have all done it at a higher level.

That's the only fair way I could think of really, but don't like comparing them to be honest. All good managers at different levels and times.

I just count myself lucky to have seen all their teams from 78 onwards.

I agree. I think he and Wikson are similar in the way they got the best out of players and creating a team.

Do not underestimate the massive achievement of coming in from another country and doing what he has. From day 1 he was giving interviews in English, it would be scary enough in his native tongue. He has met every challenge head on and I cant imagine anyone calling for him to be sacked if we fail to be promoted.

Im even luckier in that I have seen them all from 1971 onwards and so really appreciated the change when Clarke arrived :)
also the sides in the early '70s were really bad - far worse than any since no matter what some moaners on here would have you believe

I didn’t see a bad manager under Patrick.
    They were all good managers.
But they struggled because they weren’t managing on a level playing field.
Vast majority of other managers at other clubs had far more money to spend.
Consequently our managers struggled - but they were all good.
These owners brought in Morais because of his CV but he was cr@p.
Stendel is as good as the Cryne managers and better than some of them.
Best football of the last 15 years was under Hecky.
