Sunderland had extra i think they had a couple called off for internationals and one game was abandoned was that the Fleetwood one?
Not far off, I checked and we had one less game to play than Sunderland did after our respective finals. Not sure about Portsmouth. I cant quote remember our position in the table at the time but I suspect the run we were on looked after itself (we didnt have much to lose given where we'd come from) whereas Sunderland and Portsmouth probably felt the pressure of 'playing keep-up' with us and eventually cracked.
They bottled it big time. If you watch the goal celebration when they scored last night compared to any of ours you can see that the desire and team spirit aren't there in the same way as ours.
Fair enough then, it was all just too much for them, the Sunderland fans clearly blame Ross for being too negative 18 draws does seem a bit much. 9 wins and 9 loses from them and they would have won the league.
I think it was the number of games rather than the amount (although it could be argued that the amount of games weighed the teams down)
Yeah they did blame him, but then so many people complained about missed chances that they made, so *shrug* I do agree, I think the games did play a big part.
They just were not as good as the Reds. Keith Hill said Barnsley had put together a phenomenal League One side just four games into the season and he was right. We've been strong all over the park and coped with injuries pretty well. Getting five lads in the PFA team says it all - other players recognised we were the class act this year.
The number of games Sunderland had to play may have been a factor, but still no excuse for their capitulation. After we lost to Burton, they were level on points with us, with two games in hand. For them to not even take it to the last game from that position is a collapse of devon loch proportions. I thought we could realistically hope for them to drop 8 points, knowing I'm a pessimist, but they went on to drop 13 points with a game to spare. Not sure even the biggest optimist could've hoped for that. All credit to Barnsley though. We won our 4 games and didn't make life easy for Portsmouth or Sunderland.
Found it thanks to a link on another thread. So after the cup final this was the position in the tables.
