For me, Moncur doesn't have the right metabolism to enable him to go flat out for the full 90 minutes of any game. When he did get time on the pitch for us, if he was involved in "the action" for any prolonged period, you could literally see his stamina levels drop, to the point he was too knackered to track back and at times he was prone to taking a " breather" to enable some recovery time. Can't fault his pedigree his skill levels and his ability to use ,the ball sensibly. He shone at Colchester, probably because he was the best player they had on their books and was probably the first name on their teamsheet. Sadly, the lad didn't pull up any trees when we farmed him out to Peterborough and truth to tell, he played in fits and starts for us ,when he returned to Oakwell. Our coaches are not stupid. They set certain parameters that can be measured and according to how a player reacts in training during the week, they decide who will start the next game. I suppose it was obvious, that by dint of the fact that more often than not, Georgie boy couldn't have done enough in training to make sure he got a shirt on the Tuesday/ Saturday for a lot of games , he was on the bench and used as an impact sub as and when required. The signal that he was disenchanted with his lot, became patently obvious, when he turned the offer of a new deal down. After that, there inevitably was only going to be one outcome and as we now know, he joined Luton Town. I think it will be certain that the Luton manager and his coaches will have inherited the same long term shortcomings over George's ability that we did. I concede he managed to play the full game and score two goals in the Hatters final game against Oxford United. He's a well built lad and though he's probably secured a shirt in their first team for now, having observed him at close quarters with us, I have a feeling that as next season progresses, his ability to play a full ninety minutes, week in, week out will wane and he will once again be used as a substitute from the bench.
Plenty of skill, no graft. He sometimes looks great but you'll come to realise that the games he performs best in are the games you would have won without him anyway. And in the championship there will be a lot fewer of those games. He's not a player who will ever take a tight, competitive game by the scruff of the neck and win it. He just doesn't have the heart, fitness or work ethic to do it and he ends up going missing.
How many character assassinations of Moncur do we need to read on here without it becoming a trifle tedious? And while we're at it, perhaps we could have a list of footballers playing for us recently who "take a tight, competitive game by the scruff of the neck and win it".
Okay, seems like null points from Barnsley Fans for George. Trust your judgement, maybe we will just keep him charged up on the bench as super sub for visits to Oakwell
McGeehan has never taken a game by the scruff of the neck etc.....at least never for us. Mowatt is in my opinion a fine player and can score a few Conor-type goals but he needs others to do their bit too. Moncur never ran a game either, but why he gets all this hate post I do not fully understand. He will never be a box to box player. It's just how he is. Take it or leave it.
They aren't principally character assassinations. It's a discussion about his merits as a footballer. The facts regarding his time with us are unarguable. He arrived and sulked because he couldn't get in the team ahead of Conor. Instead of getting his head down and earning a pkace he asked to be loaned. Went to Posh, scored two on debut then gradually disappeared from their team. Came back admitting he'd made a mistake and vowing to work harder. Didn't. Failed to convince any of our managers he was worth a starting place. When he did get chances occasionally showed the quality we all know he has but never on anything like a consistent basis. I had high hopes when he joined us but he's a luxury player and there's very few clubs that can afford them. His time spent with us was wasted both on his part and ours.
Unless we're talking Big Mac boxes... I'm not asking him to be something he's not. Bahre will never be a box to box player but at least he puts the effort in closing down etc. and stays fit
Luxury players need to be played in the correct system. The reason your Mccourt's, Moncur's, Mellis', Knasmullners and Mallan's of this world never do owt at Barnsley is the system. You need a couple of players round them to close down n' win the ball for them. Then let them do their bit. Unfortunately they look lazy. Then you are left with cluggers like Dawson, Perkins, Williams and Gardner on the field and wonder why you're getting beaten without troubling the scorers week in, week out Modern day football is more about effort than quality these days hence your Hendersons, Delphs and Diers making England squad.
I suspect, and this is pure conjecture, that Steve Mallan would have suited the DS style very well. A very good player not given a real chance at Tarn
Makes me wonder if people actually watch Henderson play, he’s improved so much these last few years. He’s proven himself in a World Cup, in title races, in huge champions league games etc. To lump him in with Delph & Dier is very poor
A good summary of how I see it. A very good impact sub, not a player that can put in 90 minutes. Not sure if he can do anything about that or not in terms of fitness, but given he wouldn't sign a new deal, taking the money on offer from Luton was a good call, despite them being rivals.
Wouldn't call Williams or Gardner "cluggers". I'd have either of them back next season to work alongside Mowatt & McGeehan. I'm not sure we can afford too many luxury players. Bahre is that type of player, skill wise, (although needs to up his end product), but he does cover a lot of ground closing down, rather than standing with his hands on his hips. With 30 minutes to go I agree Moncur could open doors, if you are chasing the game.
I think it's more to do with fitness and professionalism. The idea of a luxury player having a lesser talented 'spade man' doing their running and tackling is very old fashioned. All players are expected to be fit as an absolute minimum requirement. There is no room for passengers in modern football from what I can see every week.
