Its like any sport, if there is a demand then the big sponsors/ fans will follow, but to put it simply there isn't, the England woman's team is Probably on the same level as a good local Barnsley Saturday side.they probably get 30 at the most watching them, regardless of what is between your legs if its poor quality then the fans will stay away
You're right at a young age it is about health and enjoyment for the kids, but the minute a charge is applied then it becomes entertainment
My original point about women not getting a game in a man's team stands and is realistic in my view. As chairman of a local junior football club I vehemently advocate the participation of girls in football and all other sports for that matter but when it comes to equal pay I believe that is just feminist ideology showing it's true colours. Always the hard done by. Accept the fact that women's sport in general raises a fraction of the wealth generated by men's sport and wages should be pro rata otherwise play with and against men as equals and accept the consequences when no women are picked and give up the game. As a spectacle women v women is a competitive battle but that is as far as it goes. Would anyone like to watch Anthony Joshua fight Katie Taylor? They are both in the same sport but I can't imagine anyone paying to watch that.
As things stand it's not sexism, it's just capitalism that dictates the men get paid more. But I would have no issue with the women's game being subsidised out of the proceeds of the men's game if it could be agreed that all top national leagues would comply. I'd agree with the argument that money shouldn't be taken out of the men's game if the players were making a modest wage but at the top end they're on 400k a week ffs
The women playing football in the top leagues (where a charge is applied) are the ones who have the biggest influence in terms of encouraging girls to play the sport. Their role is far more than just entertainment. Something which has been acknowledged by the FA with their recent campaigns. The raised profile is working. Full house at Walsall to watch England today. That would have been unheard of 10-15 years ago. The standards are improving, and more girls are taking up the sport. Yet we have people complaining that it’s taking money out if the men’s game??? Really?
I agree wholeheartedly that women’s football should be encouraged and supported and completely agree that attitudes to women’s sport (competitive or particupation) have been and still are shocking. Interesting alterntavle view on this point though, is that boys were banned from playing netball at school when I was a kid, mens netball is not supported by the netball governing body and female players have openly come out against allowing men equal treatment in the sport. It’s a strange old world........
why? If you read my post it states that I fully support girls playing all sports. Just because I don't think men and women should compete against each other because it is totally uncompetitive shouldn't have any relevance to my position. If in junior football it is apparent that one team is far superior then I would like to think our coaches would try to balance things up as no one gains from thrashing someone or indeed getting thrashed. That is why we have a league system to try and stop this happening. Incidentally if Arsenal Ladies were to ply their trade in the football league what tier do you think they would play In?
[QUOTE="Row Z, post Interesting alterntavle view on this point though, is that boys were banned from playing netball at school when I was a kid, mens netball is not supported by the netball governing body and female players have openly come out against allowing men equal treatment in the sport. It’s a strange old world........[/QUOTE] That is also wrong. However, Netball has probably never been the no1 sport in the country that people want to play, so the numbers are probably less, but it is definitely wrong. There’s a long way to go though. My 19 year old daughter plays for Handsworth. They play their games at Olivers Mount, on Sundays and have access to the main pitch. However, at some clubs we visit, the “Main Pitch ” sits unused (saved for the mens team), so the women have to play on a rough pitch around the back. This is at Clubs which access Football Foundation / Sport England/ FA funding because they have ticked the box which says they have developed Women’s Football.
I thought that the equality of pay could only occur if they played at the same level. I would be very disappointed if I had paid £250k for a Rolls Royce only to be delivered a Dacia, which is the same difference in product standard.
I don’t think there should necessarily be the same level of pay. However, I do think women representing clubs at the top of the game, should be paid, as I've explained in previous posts.
Full house at one of the smaller grounds in League One - and I wonder how many of those were freebies. I don't see any relevance of this to your last comment though.
Who has said they shouldn't get paid? They should most certainly get paid - but at the level the market dictates. Not being subsidised by the men's game.
I think it should be to a certain extent to give the game the lift off it needs. Let’s not forget, the mens game is drawing funding because of women’s football.. e.g Football Foundation funding for improvement of facilities being made available to clubs running football for women. The thought that a cash rich organisation like the FA should keep its money just for the elite men, at the exclusion if its other beneficiaries does not sit well. As a society we support e.g unemployed, disabled people etc, through money taken from those who work. This is a similar situation. In the big scheme of things the level if subsidy is tiny, and there is the potential for it to eventually become sustainable.
In some sports women and men compete equally, show jumping, and women are as successful as men so deserve equal pay. Tennis is moving towards equality, and the woman’s game is as popular as the men’s is. In sport where strength plays an important part women will always find it difficult. Football economics show the men’s game is far more popular than the women’s game in most of the world, but in the USA, The woman’s game is becoming more popular every year, so maybe the women’s pay will start reflecting this
