Some Sheffield Wednesday fans don't like our fixture being described as a derby.

It is funny how some of them are absolutely DESPERATE to show how little they care about us - but then are the first to pipe up whenever something bad happens to little owd Barnsley. Not to mention how eagerly they snap up 36 quid tickets to see their team play one they apparently done care about.

Of course it’s a Derby ! How can it be anything else .
Grounds as the crow flies ten miles apart lots of fans live and work with each other .
They try to play it down because they think they are still a big club when in truth they’re rattling round it most games .
I think tbh most fans from both sides acknowledge it’s a Derby and we all know their biggest rivalries are their noisy neighbours but other clubs as us, Rotherham,Huddersfield, Leeds, Bradford, Donny are Derby games the bravado of saying we don’t care is nonsense and shows that they do care.

There's even people saying Brentford v QPR isn't a derby. 5 miles apart in West London.

The ones saying it isn't probably live in Barnsley.

You cant talk to a Wednesday fan without them telling you how much they don't class us as a derby. They obviously do, they never shut up about it.

    Strange bunch.

They do this as they have absolutely nothing to gain from the fixture, they believe they are a big club and we are small. If they win they'll be making the usual rattle, lose and they will dismiss it as they "don't care about us". Makes it easier for them.

Its a bit like having a younger brother at about 14, pretend you aren't taking the Pontins family table tennis tournament seriously so if you lose you shrug your shoulders, say you don't care and retire to the room and cry-w@nk yourself to sleep. If you win you do 8 laps of honour and gloat about it until it ruins the holiday and your dad gives you a slap.

I'd love to see what goes on inside the head of a Wednesday fan.

    In fact, no.

They see us in the same way we see Doncaster and Rotherham.

Just because it isn't their main derby doesn't mean it isn't a derby game. There are countless 'derbies' that don't necessarily match two clubs with equal feeling towards each other.

I think we all know Sheffield Wednesday will only have eyes for Sheff Utd, then possibly even Leeds, then us. They will see our game in a similar vain to how we view Rotherham or Doncaster, a local game but not THE derby game. It's the same with Leeds and Huddersfield, with Leeds looking more towards Manchester Utd (which is reciprocated more than you'd imagine actually), but nevertheless Leeds and Huddersfield is still a derby game. Most Wednesday fans I know see us as more of a rival than say Rotherham and depending on the supporter, either more or less than Leeds. I think we've agreed on here before that we don't really have a true rivalry with a club that sees us in the same way. Doncaster probably came close in the mid 2000's but most of our local rivalries look elsewhere for the fiercest rival.

I do think the notion of a 'derby' game has been stretched a little recently, probably for the benefit of advertisers, Sky and general interest. The Dockyard Derby between Portsmouth and Plymouth for example... not sure on that one but perhaps it's legitimate given the historical context. I've also heard the Leeds Boro game been described as a derby... and again, not sure on that.

We don't try to pretend they aren't derby games though.

I think many of these massive clubs ( tongue in cheek) fans mistake a derby from a rival

Very true so many Leeds fans giving it Huddersfield aren't a rival should be Wednesday same with Wednesday and us. The tweet says derby not rival.....

    This should nail it

"The Derby is the name of the premier horse race in England and the contest was founded by the twelfth Earl of Derby in 1780. Since at least as early as 1840 'derby' has been used as a noun in English to denote any kind of sporting contest. A local derby is just a sporting contest between local rivals.

Early uses of the phrase referred to football (soccer) matches and the first printed citation appears to be the Daily Express, October 1914:

"A local Derby between Liverpool and Everton".

Such matches between the two clubs are still energetically contested. Many other clubs in this and other sports now meet to contest their own 'local derby'.

So to be clear, if it's just local rivalry-it's a DERBY!

10 miles apart is very local in football terms

    Wednesday fans please catch up
