Years ago I was a very keen match angler, loved it. Moved away then packed in when our first daughter was born, I used to get all my gear from Tackle Box on that street at the back of Ron Daleys but I've noticed that it isnt there anymore. Any anglers on here can tell me what happened to it, did they move or did it just close ? Where's a decent sized shop I could get rigged up again ? now they've all left for uni I fancy taking it back up again.
Dick moved down to hoyle Mill, Started a new company called Brittania floats then started to play more golf then go fishing. As for good tackle shops, Fishing Republic at Darfield (old snooker club) and Tardis at Birdwell (old gun club). Hope this helps!
Got cancer and called time if I remember correctly. In terms of size Fishing Republic but they’ve had a few cash flow issues, mostly into administration and purchased by JD sports holding company. Lot of issues with some bigger brands. Depending where you are based... Tardis at Birdwell or Ossett angling are worth their salt. In terms of rods reels etc... Facebook, eBay gumtree. Older rods are better than the newer ones...
Shame about Tackle Box, I could get just about everything I wanted there for fishing locally (mostly Fleets and Worsborough) although the club I was in was Mansfield Road Club and there were a lot of old miners in there who just wanted a day out so we fished matches mostly on the Trent which was quite badly polluted at the time and never fished well, or maybe it was just me ! I've tried Fishing Republic but I've had a bit of a wait for what I've ordered and prefer somewhere I can have a walk around that's going to have a decent range. Local tackle shops in near me Selby aren't a patch on what Tackle Box was and the stuff is cheap crap, don't mind travelling to visit a decent one stop shop.
The problem with that is the Internet killed of a lot of shops like Tackle Box, Wombwell Angling ect. Just going into the shop and buying a few hook's or a pint maggots and having a laugh (usually at my expense) are sadly long gone.
Birdwell for me mate, but I go to the Wednesday morning car boot/ market at Fitzwilliam, at least 3 regular fishing stalls and always find what I want...also picked up some stuff from the car booters on the site..
It's a shame, you can even order your groundbait, worms and maggots online nar. Never have thought it but as I've read a few forums there's firms who'll deliver your bait it's a shame cos as you say there was always a bit of crack and also a bit of info if you could get folk to give owt away.
Get to BobCo in Leeds, it's an Aladdin's Cave. All the brands in stock and a great pole alley if you want a waggle. Their website is worth a look also. You've just missed their latest bank holiday sale, unfortunately.
Doesn't look a bad bet that ta, just been on the website and there's a feeder rod and reel I've been looking at al probably have a drive over at the weekend
Bobco in Leeds is probably the biggest I've been In sell everything at a reasonable price online site also Google them for address
Personally I still struggle to get over the fact that Bennetts of Sheffield has gone. Remember walking in there as a teenager and being blown away that they had fully set up 13m+ poles along a wall and still had room for 12ft match rods and the counter, without it looking cluttered. Their mail order service was brilliant and I continued using them when I moved down to Cornwall. Several of the lads I used to work with also used them, not due to me suggesting them, but from adverts in the angling papers. Was Tackle box the shop on Doncaster Road, next to the other shop on Doncaster road that I'm sure a few other members will remember
Keeping it simple... their biggest customers were insurance companies. The customer went in. Got his stuff. Then they got the money from the insurance. Problem was if there was bits missing from they customers order they didnt pay out or dragged the feet leading to cash flow issues. Which had a knock on effect with suppliers etc being paid. The floods killed Steve Calcotts off. He closed once he had got the insurance and retired as far as i recall. Bennetts reopened after the floods. Closed then reopened under new owners.
Can't believe ya niva bin to a car boot trickster....it's straight past the old Royston coking plant thru Havercroft and strait on to the Catchpenny pub....starts at 6am but gets going at 7ish...every Wednesday, good luck with the fishing mate, I go to Scout Dyke a lot for the trout fishing.....lv it
