Suspect that this summer’s signings are at a higher level than Potts and McGeehan were when we signed them.
Your Premier League and I'll raise you the current European & Nations League champions. They have five full Portuguese internationals in their team.
Raise what you want point was having experience in league above- they had no experience of English Preimer league and if they had been that good they'd have been snapped up by a bigger team
Who should design thats had 25+ Championship games? Also how many qualifies for us then to be unflavoured for relegation.
I would say most likely not. Unless we’re planning on deviating from our recruitment strategy. I think that most players that fit our criteria(young, potential resale value etc) have 25 championship games under their belt and are available, will command a fee and wages that our budget can’t meet. There are merits to deviating from the strategy, Ajax are a good example. They’ve mainly been focussed on youth and development but brought in Blind and Tadic last year to add a bit of experience and had their best season in years. However we’re not Ajax, they can compete with wages and have the lure of Champions League football and trophies. I don’t know what we have that can attract an experienced championship player? I think if we were to focus on players with championship experience we’ll end up with the **** that others don’t want. Better to shop in other markets and try and find some gems. It’s easy to criticise the club but not so easy to come up with a realistic, practical suggestion on what we should be doing.
The one thing I’ve noticed is how many of recent signings say things along lines of its the right place for me, best next step etc. Which suggests we are being recognised in the game as a good stepping stone and/or the club are pushing the point as our USP. Which brings you back to what can we offer experienced?
I think they're possibly referring to the level rather than the club, but in reference to the original post, how many of the previous promotion team had championship experience? That team excelled for the first half of the season and quite a few earned themselves moves away. The one player that did have championship and premiership experience, Hamill, wasn't great.
Think a lot of that comes from continuity and confidence, I think that’s why you often see teams like Luton last year do well. There is no reason why our current squad should lack in either of them and with the right people added should add to it
We were doing great until our manager decided he needed two defensive midfielders and then we set on an idiot when Hecky left. Our downfall that season was management not our players. How much championship experience did the team that got promoted last time have. I stick up for you on her mate but don’t agree with this post at all.
My guess would be 45-50 though Wigan scraped by so there’s always hope. We could invest between now and the start of the season but as last time if we tackle this league with novices it’ll not end well
And lasted 2 seasons... failing when we lost the spine of the team that got us promoted. I’m not downbeat just realistic. I expect us to be in our around the bottom 6. There’s a reasonable chance we could get relegated and a reasonable one we could stay up. Going into it with pretty much a new defence doesn’t fill me with confidence but there’s a lot of time to go before the season kicks off. There are some poor teams kicking round the bottom of the championship we just need to finish above them.
Last time in the championship the players we signed with experience were bang average at best hammill even though a club legend did nothing after Wembley and then we signed the experienced matt mills the season after.... The problem with us signing experienced championship players who are good enough to make any difference is wages and transfer fees are out of our league hecky himself said that when he was here.
Yes we failed when we lost the spine of the team. However, early signs suggests that won't happen. Thus making your argument that we will probably get relegated next season a bit weak.
We will see. I was right that we would get promoted and right that we would get relegated last time. It’s relatively likely that we will have lost our goalkeeper and 1 of our centre halves before a ball is kicked. Does that mean we will get relegated? Of course not. Given our resources and wage structure is it likely as the bookies odds show probably.
To be fair we was favourites for relegation last time we came up via the play offs. Even many on here predicted we would struggle But we did well untill conor, bree and winnall were sold. Don't know how we will do but I think We have plenty of players who will take the step up like winnall and Conor did, Woodrow, moore, mowatt, pinnock, mcgeehan, cavare and hopefully a few more.
Yes we'll see. I think I also thought the same as you regarding those seasons. But think it's a bit daft using that to support my argument. If we lose both Pinnock and Lindsay then I'll be concerned. But that's not happened yet. And as excellent as he has been this season, I think Davies is replaceable at championship level.
